SA?

Hi ladies! DH is AGR. We've been TTC for 8 months with no luck, though we do have a 5 year old boy that was conceived without issue. I know men's sperm counts can change over time. I want him to get an SA but am not sure how to get it covered? I use tricare standard so I see doctors in the community. DH has to go on base for his care though. This is new territory for me so any advice would be helpful! Also, he does get free care at the VA as well but setting up appointments there is such a hassle!

During my pre-TTC physical the doc said you have to be trying 13 months before they will refer you to an RE. I believe that's who would order an SA. It can take a perfectly healthy couple 12 months to conceive anyway, so try to be patient and get your timing right. The TTC board will have a lot more useful info.

Yes, I know, just looking to make some "just in case" plans down the line. I believe a urologist will order one as well. How does he go about it all since he has to get his care on base though? That's where I'm confused.

After 13 months his GP should order the referral to a urologist or RE, I'm not sure which. Then if there isn't a specialist on base (which I would expect there isn't) you will either be sent or allowed to pick which civilian doctor you will see. Once the referral goes through (this takes awhile) you will call to make an appt.

At least that's how other referrals work. I have no specific experience with SA but the process should be the same.

When we were ready to seek help for infertility, both my H and I had our bloodwork/SA done on base. And then he received a referral to a civilian urologist when his SA showed bad numbers. He needs to talk with his PCP on base to see how to begin the process. If you aren't at a base with REI services, you will need to meet with GYN to get a civilian OB/REI referral as well.

Thank you ladies! I appreciate your help! Just knowing the starting point makes me feel better.
