SPD and earlier membrane stripping

I'd love to hear what others with SPD have been told by Their doctors about earlier than normal membrane stripping or induction.
I'll discuss this with my Dr. at my next appointment, I'll be 37+5. I'm praying he'll strip my membranes to see if it jump starts labor. As of a few days ago, baby is at a station -1/0 and I'm dilated to 1, so I do think it could work.
I'm absolutely miserable and in constant, excruciating pain that I pray every day I'll go into labor, even though I'm only 36 weeks. (For the record, yes I know it's best to let baby stay in as long as possible) I have a 5 year old and 2 year old that I can barely care for due to my limited mobility. I just want some relief.
Do you think dr's see this as a reason to jump start labor?

Re: SPD and earlier membrane stripping

  • A lot of doctors have a minimum date they'll do any type of labor encouragement. I think it's usually 38 weeks but each dr is different and you should definitely have the conversation at your next appt and come up with a plan. I'm dealing with it too and while I won't ask to be induced I am going to ask when he'll be willing to scrape the membranes. Hoping between 38-39 weeks.

  • I have bad spd. It's different everyday, some days I don't notice it and some days I get shooting pains and can feel it with every step. I was thinking about talking to my Dr at my appt tomorrow about it. I'll be 37w4d which I feel is early but I want her opinion. I'm dialated to a 1 in a half as of last week. I also get bad sciatica pain when I walk more than 15/20 minutes at a time. I will definitely post back here and let you know what I decided and what my Dr said.
  • Let me know! @Chelsey092, if she'd do it for you, I'd bet mine would for me. Unfortunately mine is worse than yours. I can barely walk at all.
  • My doctor will strip membranes when I am at least 38 weeks and showing signs of dilation and thinning. Every doctor has a little different practice so it wouldn't hurt to ask!

  • I haven't talked to my midwife about membrane stripping so I can't help you there...

But I will say that I'm 39+2 today and the last couple weeks my spd pain has been almost non existent except when I'm sleeping. So there may be hope that it might go away if you don't even up going into labor. I'm sorry :/ it's rough. Mine was so bad when I was working but I quit 2 weeks ago tomorrow and I've felt so much better. But I know you can't quit taking care of LOs.

I got stripped at my appt today! It wasn't even because of my spd, she will do it anytime after 37 weeks. As of 6 days ago I was dialated at a 1.5 and today I'm at a 2.5 sonic had some progress over the last week. It was uncomfortable but really quick. She told me the icing on the cake is I should have sex now. I'm not sure if I'm up for that but I'm hoping something will happen within a couple days.

It's the oxytocin from orgasm that helps bring on contractions, not the sex itself. I'm sure you can come up with some creative alternatives to achieve the same end result...
  • Yay! @Chelsey092 that gives me so much hope. Hope for you that baby is ready to come!

Make sure you let us know!
  • And the prostaglandins in semen help to soften and efface! My doc offered stripping as early as 38 weeks due to SPD, but he said standard is 39. I'm sorry you are going through that. I'm struggling with my toddler and SPD, but mine is mostly at night, sleeping is terrible. I'm ready for deprivation. Haha
  • Did you have your appt yet? Did you get swept?
  • It's today at 4! Did your sweep induce labor?
  • It didn't work. I got swept again on Monday and so far nothing. My LO is nice and comfortable. At work I've been having to walk alot now and it's really draining on my body so I think I'm going to have my Dr take me off work starting tomorrow. So hopefully he will come soon. I'll be 39 weeks tomorrow. Let us know how your appt goes!
  • I'm 40 weeks today and my midwife just stripped my membrane's yesterday...no labor action as of yet. Although it is supposed to help, I've heard a lot of stories where it can still be days or even weeks after a membrane sweep (or multiple sweeps) until any action happens. All I got was some on and off cramping for a couple hours. They offered me a sweep at 38 weeks and 4cm dilated but I said I wished to wait at least a week longer. I wish you all the best, it's definitely a discussion worth having with your doctor. I know normally they wait until around 39 weeks to do a sweep but again, every doctor/midwife is different. They try you go by what is best for your pregnancy.
  • last pregnancy I had mine stripped 3 times.
    THREE Times!
It didn't work to put me into labor, but my labor was super short (5 hours), not sure if it helped? My Dr. won't do it until 38 weeks - but I'm not sure if I want to do it this time. IMO, it hurts like a bitch.

  • I had my DS last night! Idk if it was the second strip I did which was monday or the walking I was doing or him just being ready but I had my baby boy at exactly 39 weeks. I did feel my spd rolling a little last night but not much at all. I think last time it was a couple days until the pain was completely gone. Good luck everyone!
  • Just wanted to say I have tried EVERYTHING to help naturally induce labor after my sweep last week (except Castor Oil or anything with symptoms affecting dear baby) and still NOTHING! Been at 4cm dilated since December 22nd!!! So I'll hopefully get another sweep next week and go for the longest walk of my life and do everything all over again and it helps bring baby out. I wanted to have an at home, natural birth, but with the way this baby is clinging to me it might have to be an in hospital birth :( This is the first pregnancy where baby has made it to 40 weeks and the first pregnancy where I also dilated super fast with no labor. My fingers are crossed for everyone! And Congrats Chelsey092!
  • As a follow up to my original comment about not being induced, I am now eating a big slice of humble pie. I thought I could do it. I thought I could tough it out for a little while longer. But then this baby dropped to -1 and my left leg basically stopped working and when the dr told me I had 0 dilation but nearly 100% effacement yesterday I lost whatever shred of strength I had left. He was amazed at how tight I was under that much pressure. The pain is just too much. I'm waiting to hear if I have a spot to start induction with cervadil tomorrow night. I had to justify my decision to every important person in my life bc I talked out my a** about not doing this for the last few months. So lesson learned.. keep my mouth shut and be more open minded because you never know until you're there.
