The 'bottom line' as an indicator of dilation? True or false?

I know this is probably a little too much for a lot of people, but at 40 + 5, I just don't care!
I've heard about a purple line that ascends up your butt crack as you dilate. Once it reaches just above where your butt crack begins, supposedly your cervix is 10cm. My midwife (actually, the whole hospital) go by a minimum intervention policy, which for them means not doing cervical checks unless there is a need. I'm totally fine with this, but I am so jealous reading some of you ladies say your 1,2,3 etc cms dilated! I can't feel my cervix myself, it's always been high. Not sure if this is good or not! So, for those of you who know roughly how dilated you are, you know what I'm asking! Does it ring true for you? I'm booked in for a stretch and sweep tomorrow (provided my cervix has begun dilating), so I Suppose I will find out then how dilated I am. But at this stage in pregnancy that is SO FAR AWAY!

  • I wasn't dilated for either of my boys before I went to the hospital, induced and RCS, but had the purple line.

  • With my first I was 3 cm dilated 36wks. 41wks 5days Induction and a C section later I met my little girl.
This time no one has checked me and I am OK with it. all it did the last time was get my hopes up. Hang in there. they have to come out at some point soon ;)
  • My midwife said she has seen this to be true.

I wasn't checked with my last pregnancy at all. DS was born at 37 weeks without any interventions. Labor/delivery was fast and furious. This time around I was checked at 36 weeks. I didn't even realize she was going to check me. My midwife was gone for a birth and instead of rescheduling I just went into a different provider for my group B strep test. That provider decided to "check" my dilation/etc. I was 1 cm. I don't think these numbers really mean much. One of my good friends was 3cm from 35 weeks and had her baby at 40+3.
  • I have never heard of any purple line at all. That seems very weird to me. Also dilation doesn't mean anything unless you are well over 5cm dilated. I don't get checked at all. My OB usually starts doing them at 34 weeks, but as long as I'm not having contractions or thinking I'm in labor, we aren't doing it.
  • Thanks for your replies ladies :) had my stretch and sweep today. Only 1cm with a soft but high cervix. I know these things can change quickly, but can't help but feel a little disappointed. My induction is booked in 3 days time so I'm really hoping to get labour happening on its own before then!
