2nd Trimester

Listeria concerns

Hey everyone! So one week ago I ate some turkey from my local grocery stores deli in a wrap they had put out. It was 9am so it hadn't been out too long. Anyways fast forward to that afternoon and I get a bad headache and I've had a headache and nausea(never had any morning sickness) every day since. I've also had lower/mid backache but I'm not sure if that has to do with being 14 weeks pregnant. I had routine blood work done which showed my white blood cell count was normal but I am freaked out about listeria! I had no idea you could get it from deli meat.. I asked my doctor but he refused to test me for it but I am stressing out about this. Any info/advice?

You are fine. Yiu don't fit the signs. A little headache and some back pain is not a sign. It is usually a intense and horrible headache, horrible pain, seizures, high fever, nausea vomiting and diarrhea.

It is a significant food poisoning.

Also, the last 10 years, there has no been a major listeria outbreak in relation to deli meat. Most have been fruits, peanut butter and ice cream. You don't see any warning labels for those, do you?

Everything she said ^^. Also listeria can take weeks to show symptoms- you definitely wouldn't know you had it the same day or even the same week

    exactly this.
if your doctor thought it was listeria, they definitely would have tested you for it. take a deep breath & relax. also, you can get MS at any point in your pregnancy. it's most common in 1st Tri, but that doesnt mean you cant get it in 2nd & 3rd Tri. i had bad MS for a few weeks in 1st Tri. it disappeared for a while, then came back hard in 2nd Tri. so far in 3rd Tri i havent had any.
  • Oh okay, I've read that listeria can be fairly mild in pregnant women but can affect the baby which is why I've been so concerned. Thanks for the advice!
  • Hope you are feeling better and yes to everything pp have said :) you are actually more likely to get it from fresh fruit then deli meat :) pregnancy is hard with so many different worries and then throw in a million different pregnancy side effects it's a terrible combination. Trust your dr relax and feel better soon!

It is the opposite, it tends to be much strong in pregnancy than for normal healthy people.

All of that is in the link from the CDC, which I trust with my life.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • The book "Expecting Better" is a great resource on questions like this, if you have more. I recommend it. Tore through it a few hours. Yes, to PPs. I talked to my high risk doc and he reiterated that the incidence of these food related issues is greatly overblown and to use common sense when making food choices. I ate three bologna sandwiches that week and was very happy (you know, bc bologna is SOO good for you). Listeria is more likely in pregnant women but your overall risk is low.

When I was pregnant, you couldn't have pried my peanut butter or ice cream from my cold, dead hands.

I lurk. I snark. I offer sound advice if you're not BSC. You may not like me. I'm okay with it.
