BF moms - how long per side now?

BF mothers, my baby just turned 2 months old a few days ago. How long are you feeding your baby per side? Are you still doing 15 minutes per side or more like 10? I think I may be having an oversupply problem that's causing my baby to spit up a lot more than he used to. I've been feeding him about 12 minutes per side in the daytime and overnight and 15 minutes per side in the late afternoon and evenings. I pump twice a day and get about 6 oz. per 20 minutes (it's a double pump - 3 per side.) Where are you ladies at with feeding your little ones?

Re: BF moms - how long per side now?

  • My LO feeds between 5 to 10 min per side, usually closer to 5. I generally pump 8oz at a time.

  • LO latches for maybe 5-7 min. I get 6 oz per 8-10 min of pumping.
  • It depends on his mood. He's usually pretty fast so 5 to 10 minutes. He decides how long he nurses.
3 ounces per side when you pump is pretty common. Doesn't sound like an over supply.
You could have a fore milk and hind milk issue.
Try block feeding where you feed on the same side 2 times in a row. I had to do that with my daughter because she was very spitty. Turns out I had a lot of fatty foremilk and that's all she was getting each time she ate and it made her spit up. By feeding on the same side a second time she got more of the hind milk and was less spitty.

LO is 9 weeks. If she is "chugging" lo latches 5-10minutes on one side, usually looks milk drunk afterwards and 9 times out of 10 refuses the other breast.
Other times she seems to nibble or maybe is increasingly distracted because she will go for 10-20 minutes with intermittent swallowing.

Edit to include I can pump ~5oz per breast in about 7 minutes so LO's behavior makes sense.
  • I'm jealous ladies, I get about 1/4 to 1/2 oz per side.
  • @kdoak2015 - I used to until I was given the advice to drink water like nobody's business. That was the most helpful thing in increasing my supply.
  • My LO likes to hang out on my boob still so we nurse forrreeeevvvvvverrrrr. Sometimes he still takes an hour because he "sleep sucks". Not sure how to get him to eat faster. So often we only get a few minutes before it's nap time again

    I'm about 64+oz of water a day, it's all I drink. :(

You need more like 100+. Aim like you're supposed to do for pregnancy and drink one ounce per pound you weigh.

    Agreed, I have a 32 oz water bottle that I fill 4 to 6 times a day.
  • I nurse my boy for about 15 minutes and He only feeds from one side every time. I also pump 3 times a day. At 7am, 12pm, and 5pm. I get 8oz every time. I'm probably pumping a lot more than I need since my baby has only been taking about 12-16oz when Im at work. but my freezer stash is pretty impressive

I use one of those 32oz bottles and also go through at least 6 a day. I add dasani flavoring or diluted crystal light to keep it appealing.

It took a while to get proficient with pumping too. As other threads advise make sure you are massaging etc, that all helped me.
  • Crazy I didn't know you need that much, I have a 32 oz bottle also and maybe drink 2-3 a day, guess I need to up my intake.
  • Your need is based on a lot of different factors but weight is one of them. I read somewhere the average person should consume between 0.5-1oz of water per day per pound of body weight. If you are active you obviously need additional water and of course with lactation you need even more!
  • An once of water per pound?! Geesh, here I thought I was drinking a ton and I am nowhere near that. I feel like I would drown if I drank that many ounces. I've been better about trying to drink more but I'm having the hardest time just getting that many fluids down period.

I'm only at 1/4-1/2 oz per side as well! I do drink a ton of water, but no dice. Very jealous of you ladies who can pump 3 oz+ in a sitting! Happy for you, but frustrating for me that I tap out at an ounce if I'm lucky.

She will eat for 5-10min per side. Usually both sides and usually closer to 5min per. I only pump once a day (and lately haven't been pumping because my freezer stash is pretty god). When I do pump it's right after she eats for 12min and I get 3-5oz total.
  • @Ellsmac -Could it be that you don't have a very efficient pump?
  • I don't time, but I have a super fast milk flow and I actually have to pinch my areola so she doesn't choke and keep pulling off the entire time. She would guzzle for a few minutes and then would relatch for a few seconds, let go, relatch, and keep pulling off screaming and trying to relatch. I was wondering if she wasn't getting milk, but her mouth was milky and sometimes she would spit some out, and finally figured out she was getting too much at once. Now that I've been stemming the flow by pinching my breast near my areola, she latches for 10-15 minutes (only one side) and doesn't scream. I block feed if she wants to eat again in less than two hours. I also definitely have oversupply, I pump at least 5 oz per side in less than 10 min.
  • @nycmommy13 I wish that were it! I have the Madela advanced or whatnot but we started renting a pump from the hospital while I try to increase supply.
  • LO nurses about 10 minutes on one side! I'm amazed, it's was so recent nursing was a 40 minute ordeal.
