Pregnant after 35

Progesterone level 17.1 b/w 6w and 7w

I just heard back from my OB that my progesterone level taken last week at 6w4d was 17.1. She says the normal range for first trimester is between 10 and 90. She is generally opposed to progesterone supplements for women who conceive naturally. I'm wondering if others are on supplements and what their provides use as a lower limit for supplementation because I've read conflicting reports. I'm using OTC progesterone cream, but am still concerned about being on the low end of the normal range. Thoughts?

Re: Progesterone level 17.1 b/w 6w and 7w

  • I have been on progesterone through the first trimester for all of my pregnancies. With my DS, my first result after getting my bfp was 11. My doctor said that she wanted it at a minimum of 20, but I think that every doctor has their own number that they are comfortable with. With my DD, my result after my bfp was 14. And with this one, because I was on Clomid and my progesterone was known to be low, my doctor started me on progesterone at 3dpo. My 12dpo result was 56, which was unheard of for me (especially since I take it vaginally and I understand that it's not actually supposed to affect your blood levels that much.)
I know that not all doctors are onboard with progesterone, but I do feel like it helped me keep my pregnancies. The good news is that 17 is not that low, but I can understand why you would want some extra assurance.

  • Mine was 10 at 8dpo (before I knew I was pg) and I called my dr to ask if I could get it tested again to see if it was high enough to sustain my pregnancy. They said I was fine and I should relax and enjoy this pregnancy. I'm almost 12w, so I guess it was fine. (But geez, another test wouldn't have hurt!)

  • Mine was 14 around that time, 15 two weeks later. My doctor was fine with anything above 10, as long as I wasn't having a lot of spotting. You should be good! :)
  • Sorry I don't have more to offer, but i did read that progesterone levels can change throughout the day and can drop after eating. So they say to have it checked first thing in the morning. There is a lot conflicting information out there about it, I read one scientific paper that said supplementation didn't realy do much in the study it was used in. But i'm not a doctor in that field so who knows??? I hope you get some good answers! I tested my own levels through request a test it was $60. That was cheaper then having my naturopath order the test.
  • My progesterone level (tested yesterday at 6w 2d) was 9.6. I have to take supplements. Last pregnancy when I miscarried it was 8.4 so I guess that's improvement.

  • Mine was at a10.1 so I was put on 200mg. Poor pharmacy tech was so embarrassed telling me I had to put them "in there" when I called. Paperwork said by mouth but the label said vaginally.

My doc didn't check my levels but told me at my last appt 9+ weeks she saw the placenta forming so at 10 weeks (3 days ago) I could stop.
Messy little things and why the hell would they make them a pinkish shade. A few times I freaked out thinking I was having some light spotting only to realize it was the medicine.

  • Hahahaha @carrieandroy! Terrible and wonderful. ;)
  • Lol @CarrieandRoy I felt bad for the poor kid. He sounded so young. Well you know some take it orally but for fertility they use the other way. Lol.
I had to keep from cracking up on the phone. I lost it once I hung up.
