Suddenly A Cranky Pants

DS will be 7 weeks tomorrow and the last few days after his 5:30 bottle he turns into an inconsolable cranky pants. Doesn't seem to be gas related, I try everything. Burping, playing, walking, swaying and nothing seems to work. He might stop for 5 min but will start back up. Last night I was somehow able to get him to fall asleep in my arms for 30 min before bath time.

The other night I thought maybe he was still hungry as nothing worked to console him and he ate 2 more ounces at 7 which was in addition to the 4 he had at 5:30. But the crying started shortly after he was done with the additional 2 ounces so I'm thinking he wasn't actually hungry just ate out of comfort.

After his bath he is fine, eats his 8:30 bottle and goes right to bed and sleeps until about 4am.

What the heck! Has anyone else's normally happy baby turned into a cranky butt out of no where?!

Re: Suddenly A Cranky Pants

  • Growth spurt. Have you heard of the wonder weeks app? He might be going through a leap. I would recommend downloading it. It might help you understand LO better. It's helped me a lot! Hang in there!
  • Loading the player...
  • Definitely sounds like what I was just going through with Arlo. He went through a growth spurt and would be cranky most of the evening. He's back to being a happy baby :)
  • I will definitely check out that app!
  • Yup! Cecily is going through a wonder week and is turning into a she-devil at about 7 every night!
  • Are any of you able to console them during this time? I feel so bad he does the purple cry of death and I can't help!
  • When DS had those super cranky times I would put him in the swing, but not turn it on. I would manually push the swung back and forth, I could get it to go much faster and that seemed to help. I would also leave the hair dryer running while I pushed the swing. It would usually take 10 to 15 minutes (seems like forever when you are pushing the swing with a screaming baby), but then he would fall asleep. Once completely asleep I would turn the swing on. If he stayed asleep I turn the hair drying off after a while. If you try it set the hair dryer on cool so it does not get too hot. I used the vacuum also for extra loud white noise sometimes.

  • I had read that putting your swing and white noise on the highest/loudest setting was recommended but wondered if that would actually work. I would think being swung super fast in a loud room would piss me off more but babies seem to follow the rule of opposites! Thank you!
  • Bridget was this way for about 2 weeks.  I would put her in her carrier and dance/bounce and sing.  She'd usually fall asleep or at least suck on her pacifier after about 5 minutes or so.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I just kind of let Zeke use me as a human pacifier. He only occasionally takes a real paci. When that didn't cut it I would bounce with him on my yoga ball I'd bought during pregnancy (fun fact: first time bouncing with him on the ball he fell asleep in less than 5 minutes... Haven't been quite that lucky but I can usually get him to fall asleep if I bounce long enough)

White noise often helps too. Sometimes I have to turn it up really loud so he hears it over his wails but usually it calms him down.

Zeke had the wonder week around 7 weeks too. I thought I was going to lose my mind. He still is fussy most nights but not as bad. Except last night but that was mine and DH's fault for neither one of us realizing that the other hadn't changed the poor guy's diaper.
  • 7 weeks today and this started yesterday for us. My normally sweet baby is cranky all day and won't nap, which only makes him crankier. Also eating erratically. The swing and white noise usually buys us 30 minutes in the evening.

Wow thanks so much for this suggestion @alyssaleighw! Just downloaded the app since my LO is going through the same thing, @angelinthepit23. He is 6 weeks today. Hang in there!!

Jack finally fell asleep (laying on me, but hey, it still counts) for his first nap since waking up at 10 am. I had a severe case of the overtired baby syndrome today!
