Pregnant after 35

Help! Are these issues normal?

I'm a 37 y/o teacher who's pregnant with my first and today I am 6 weeks 1 day pregnant. I can't get over this horrible fatigue and tiredness. It was my first week back to work after the holidays and all I wanted to do after work was go home, lie on the couch and cry. This weekend I've done nothing but sleep. I slept 13 hours yesterday and so far 11 today. I can't get enough sleep. I'm also nauseous and am extremely thirsty all the time. Is this all normal?

Alas, yes. I'm extremely tired too and drink a ton of water. It got better in the second tri for me last time, but yeah. I think this is all pretty normal. ;)

ETA: it'd be good to mention any and all of this to you doc too, of course. I find my emotions feel bigger when I am pregnant. If they feel overwhelming or out of control, definitely talk with you doctor about options.

  • 100% normal, your hormone levels are going nuts a,one a million other things.  Don't fight it, take naps when you can!! I got my energy back around week 13, I know that seems far away:) just know it's all normal, listen to your body!

Yep fatigue & nausea have been my friend for a while too, when I was expecting my second my son was a toddler and I'd lie on the floor everyday after work and sleep while he toddled around for a good 1.5 months....

Edited for typo...always on mobile :(

  • Yep. I'm just under 10 weeks and all I do on the weekend is rest on the couch. I talked to my OB and she said this is normal. I work 35 hrs a week, commute 10hrs and have a 5 year old son.

  • Yes, 6 weeks is generally when the worst of it hits. 6-8 weeks were the hardest for me, and things very slowly improved since then. By 10 weeks it was much more manageable and by 11 weeks I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Everyone is different, but I wanted to tell you my experience so you know it may not be this bad all the way to the second trimester. My advice for nausea is to eat. Eat whatever foods you think you can handle. The longer you go on an empty stomach, the more nauseous you will feel. And I've discovered that nausea is easier to prevent than to fix. I also noticed along the way that even though carbs were more appealing, protein helped the nausea more. (This may not be true for everyone.) Peanut butter crackers were good when food aversions made it hard to eat other forms of protein. And if you develop a bad taste in your mouth, icebreakers mints are a big help. I started with gum, but mints are better. Good luck!

  • Completely normal.  Also, as a fellow school employee, you know the day back after break always makes you feel sort of like you got hit by a truck under the best circumstances.  Add in pregnancy and it's no wonder all you want to do is sleep.  I'm on my third giant cup of water today plus several cups of tea and some coffee and my biggest problem is finding a time to go to the bathroom.
  • Yes, TOTALLY normal! When I hit pregnant last spring at 36, I would literally pack myself up when heading to dismissal with the kids. As soon as the last kids was gone, I'd hop in my car and head home. I'd take a nap Finn the moment I got home until my husband woke me for dinner, and then I'd head up to bed!!
  • Normal! I am 15 weeks and 6 weeks was whrn my symptoms really kicked in: exhaustion, food aversions, emotions, and nausea. I had no idea that I could be that tired or be so turned off by all kinds of foods I once liked. I was also extremely sensitive to smells. I hear that most people feel better by the second trimester which was ABSOLUTELY the case for me. That was after 6-8 weeks of feeling like I had the flu. Everyone is different tho#
Hang in there mama, you'll get through this! Do the best you can to go easy on yourself and don't feel guilty if you need to take naps, say no to social engagements, or can't do things you normally would do. Hope this was helpful and keep on keeping on!
  • @lillebowski23 it's totally like the flu! A friend of mine was just making a big deal on fb about having the flu for two days and how she wouldn't wish that on anyone because "there's nothing worse than nausea" and I was thinking "try a month and a half of that!"
