Umbilical stump - question for STMs

LO is 6 days old and his stump fell off today. That seems kind of early, right? I'm trying to remember when the dr told us to expect it to fall off, but I can't. Yesterday when I was changing his diaper, he sort of grabbed and twisted it about 90 degrees but it didn't seem to bother him at all. There was no blood and only a little left inside his belly button. Anything I need to do? Should we wait for the bit inside his bb to fall out before giving him a real bath?
And bonus question....as far as the bath goes...can we submerge his penis while his circ is still healing? They never mentioned this. It looks pretty good, just has that yellowish discharge on the head. Thanks!

Re: Umbilical stump - question for STMs

  • My little one hasn't lost his umbilical stump yet he's only 5 days old but today the pediatrician told us to wait until it falls off and we can see that the belly button doesn't have anything left in it! If I were you I would wait on the bath for a few days to see if what's left in the belly button comes out.

  • @kaym6 thank you! We go back to his pedi in 2 weeks. We'll continue with the sponge baths

  • My LO's umbilical stump fell off around 12 days.  His did bleed a little bit and we had his 1st appointment the next day.  The pediatrician put some silver stuff (I can not remember the darn name) to dry it up.  He had a little bit of a stump left, like what you've described your LO has.  We just gave him a sponge bath and within 3-5 more days, it fell off.
  • I don't think 5 days is too early but I would also wait until it all goes away to completely submerge in water.  Our Pedi also gave one of ours the silver stuff b/c there was a little bit left and we just happened to have an appointment I think.  We didn't make a special appointment for that.

As far as the circumcision, DS was fine w/ being in water during healing.  No one told us not to.

  • They fall off when they fall off. There is no real set time. Even when the doctor tells you it's just an estimate.
  • I was told not to give DS a bath until both his belly button stump fell off and his circumcision looked completely healed. The ped at the hospital I delivered at said that soap can cause irritation (specifically to the circumcision) and do more harm than good.

DS got his first tub bath a few days ago at about 2 weeks old. I waited a few extra days only because I'm super cautious and didn't want to hurt him. (DH and I were super scared to change his diapers alone too. We tag teamed those until DH had to go back to work)
  • My daughter's fell off at 9 days.. We applied a bit of dettol on it.. It's slightly prone to infection so our doc told us to keep the place clean and dry at all times
  • From the dec board.. My LOs fell off at 4 days old. I felt horrible cause I thought I accidentally helped pull it a little while taking off her clothes the day before. They said it was early but they weren't worried. She did start bleeding though so we took her to the doctor. They said just not to touch it. Almost 3 weeks old now and it's finally looking better. They had told us to just watch in case it started showing signs of infection.
  • No one told me not to give LO baths until after the stump came off, in fact the midwives at the hospital even showed me how to bath him. Then another midwife recommended we bath him everyday, with some betadine in the water, due to a rash he had. LOs stump fell off in about 6 days.
  • Ours just fell off last night. Baby is 3 days old. Both our twins lost theirs early too. None had any help. Be happy. Diaper changes are a lot easier. As long as there's no bleeding or other irritation - it should just look like a perfect little belly button now - don't worry. But your dr isn't going to mind if you call and ask.

Also I don't know that a little redness or bleeding is necessarily a problem. Ours all looked perfect right away when the stumps came of. so that's all I know.
  • I'm a FTM.
LO is two wks and 4 days his stump is still holding on strong- pediatrician reccomended we put alcohol on it once a day to help it fall out.

As far as circ, I was told not to submerge him in water until that healed and the umbilical cord stump falls out

His circ has healed but still no bath until the stump falls out :\
  • @carlyhammond, how long did it take his circ to fully heal? We are on day 8 and it looks like the scab is slowly starting to go away. I am more anxious than anything because I am waiting for him to be healed completely to start using our cloth
