What to expect when the levels aren't expected

Hi I'm new here and am in need of some peace of mind. I am 5w6d and my levels went from hcg at 981 and progesterone at 27.7. In 6 days It went to 3191hcg and 14.7progesterone. My OB said hcg should be at 7898 if it had doubled every couple of days. And wants to do more blood tests and a Sono, she also gave me 100mg of progesterone to take 3 times a day orally. My concern is, I have had one healthy pregnancy with no complications with a c-section, then 2 years later we got pregnant in May but my progesterone dropped, even on supplements and we lost the baby in June. I am terrified these levels mean we are going to lose this baby as well. I had to practically beg for the supplements and sono. Do these levels mean I will lose the baby? Is there any hope? After my 1st natural Mc they did an ultrasound and everything looked great and normal for us to go ahead and try again for this baby. It took 6 months, and I just don't understand what's wrong. My levels were 35hcg and 27.8 the first time they tested. Then 2 days later it was 93hcg and 27.2 progesterone, then it was 981hcg and 27.7progesterone, and now 6 days later... it's 3197hcg with a progesterone of 14.7. What does this mean? Should I prepare myself for the worst? Or is it really too early to tell? Are these levels okay? Please help this scared mommy!

  • Betabase.info is a great resource to use when looking at HCG.

  • Hcg levels don't always double every 48 hours after about 1800-2000.
I know it's hard to do... 2 losses myself... but just take care of you and focus on the next milestones. You can do it
  • The answers to your questions are, unfortunately, completely individual. Your OB will have to follow up with you. HCG & P4 drops are not favorable, but you aren't out until the trend continues. If your little bean rallies & HCG goes back up it could be a favorable sign, but no one else's outcome will mean much for you.

The good news in all of this is that your previous miscarriage (I'm very sorry for your loss) doesn't doom you either. Even in the same individual viability outcomes vary & run case by case basis.

I'm hoping for you & your little bean.

  • Big hugs to @karatturio.  I hope everything turns out well for you.
TTC for Baby #1 for 3 years. After 2 failed IUI's & IVFs, God blessed us with our miracle :).  FET 12/17/15 (transferred 2 embryos at 5days). First Beta 12/29/15 = 354. Second Beta 12/31/15 = 694. Third Beta 1/7/16 = 6,695.  Finally heard his heartbeat (126)  on 1/14/16 @ our 1st US.  2nd US on 1/21/16, HR was 159.  The most beautiful sound ever :)
  • Thank you all for your kind words! For an update I went in 2 days after my previous blood work for more blood work and a sono. My Dr. Said everything was measuring good and was in the right place. He was surprised when he zoomed in and saw a beautiful fluttering heartbeat! Although I'm still early, we couldn't hear it yet. My blood work came back the next day and after just 3 doses of taking progesterone orally at 100mg it went from the worrisome low of 14.7 to its highest it has been so far, at 37.8! The nurse was baffled and said she's never seen anything like it! God is good! My HCG I'm still concerned about, but my Dr. Isn't... It went from the 3,197 to 3,695...so it's still not doubling. I'm going in this Monday for another round of blood work. I'm probably just driving myself crazy with all these #'s. But I just want everything to be okay. I also have a follow up sono this coming Thursday. So praying my levels are better and we get to hear my little sweet peas heart beat. Wondering if it's silly to be concerned or not. The ultrasound gave peace of mind for sure! But my hcg not doubling in over 9 days and just slowly rising has me concerned. The waiting is the hardest! I am always afraid when I go to the bathroom I'll see a pink tint on the toilet paper and it will be all over. I'm having several nightmares. And I know worrying is not gonna help either, but it's hard not to. What do y'all think? Is the Dr. giving me sound advice, should I not be concerned?? Tues blood report can't come soon enough! I've been using betabase like crazy! I'm so sorry for your loss mamaroni it's so hard not to stress hugs! That's great sound advice primrosemama! And hugs to you plumeria05!
  • At about 6 weeks I was at 6,000 then two days later 6,700. The doctor freaked me out that there was a problem. Went in for an u/s and everything measured on track and seen heartbeat at 111. I asked for another blood draw but she said after they see a heart beat hcg numbers don't mean much. In the back of my mind I still wonder but I will be 8 weeks this week, next u/s on Tues. I wouldn't worry about the numbers. I wish I didn't even know mine lol
  • I know what you mean! I am supposed to have mine drawn tomorrow and I kinda don't want to. I'm so glad they got a heartbeat for you! They saw a fluttering in mine on my last u/s But we couldn't hear anything to measure. Next u/s is Thursday if all is well with levels! Let me know how it goes with your u/s.
  • Mine didn't go so well... The heart beat this time was 58. They think I will lose it this week. I will keep positive thoughts for you, Lord knows how difficult this process is. And my God how strong we are as women. Good luck to you!
