Fundal Height

So I don't remember measuring ahead with DS, but today doc said I'm measuring about 4 weeks ahead according to fundal height. Passed my GD (barely) and he scheduled an US for my 28 week appt. I've gained 4 pounds so far so I don't think it's extra weight. He's not worried, and I'm not either, but I forgot to ask what this could mean besides a possibly bigger baby...anyone else chatted with their OB and received some answers?

I measured small with DD and the OB said that the differences (up or down) are most often due to amniotic fluid levels, normal size range differences or baby's position.

  • I measured big the whole time with my son. Some babies are just bigger than others! :)
  • I measured 4wks ahead for about month with my son, my second baby. Dr said he was prob just in a growth spurt cause at the next appt I measured right on. He was 7lbs7oz when born at 38wks :)

My sil measured 5weeks head from like 28 wks on. Us showed to be like 10lbs. Turns out she had a bunch of fluid)like almost 3liters when they broke her water. He was 8lbs 6oz born at 39wks.
  • I'm measuring big too. I kind of expected it though since I also measured big with DS3 who was born at 9.3 lbs :-) I too have a growth ultrasound at 28 weeks. In my first two pregnancies, I would flucuate, sometimes measuring ahead, sometimes behind and my OB always said it was likely the way the baby was positioned. Amniotic fluid levels can also play a part in measurement.

I'm looking forward to seeing what my girl measures on ultrasound. I may need to return the newborn stuff lol.

  • I wonder how much amniotic fluid actually weighs. I keep getting told "you look so much bigger than last time I saw you!" Which I'm honestly not seeing personally, but ok? Maybe it's a combination of "you're pregnant, therefore I should say this to you!" And flmuid retention? Because I haven't gained any weight in the past few weeks... Oh well, I have an appointment tomorrow, so I'm bracing myself for all the "oh I know you think everything is fine and normal, but here's why it isn't"

So I am in the exact same spot! I am 26 weeks and have gained 4lbs total. I'm measuring 5 weeks ahead at this point. I thought I was smaller this time around, but I guess not! At 20 weeks I measured right on but her anatomy scan showed she had super long legs, so I'm assuming that's the situation. I go back in 2 weeks for another ultrasound and to do my GD test. I think it's probably fluid. I had a ton last time too. I'm really interested to see what they tell you!
  • I'm the opposite - been referred for an ultrasound as the baby is registering small.
Fundal measurements show no growth in the last 3 weeks (between 25-28 wks), yet baby is v active, bump is growing and baby has a v strong heartbeat.

To be honest - how accurate can measuring your stomach be?! I'm a FTM but I've so many friends who've been 'too big' or 'too small' and predictions have been off the scales yet given birth to perfectly averaged sized babies.

I'm not worried at this stage, will be good to have the scan, but not worried.
  • My doctor got me all concerned today because I'm measuring slightly behind. Up 2.5cm in four weeks. He was having a hard time figuring out where the top of my uterus was though because DD2 is up high. Hoping it was just that. I'm so much bigger than four weeks ago so I'm trying not to put too much stock in it.

  • @jkeezy I have a tall, slim coworker who measured small with both of her babies. They sent her for ultrasounds both times to check. Baby #1 was 8#13oz (arrived a few days late) and baby #2 was 8#3oz (c-section at 39 weeks).

It does seem odd to me that such a rough-seeming measurement would hold much weight, but then ultrasounds can be way off too as we saw in the thread the other day.

  • I think the measurements are a lot like the 1 hour GT test - a quick screen with a fairly high false positive rate, but much more efficient than having everyone do growth ultrasounds in the third trimester.

  • I like your insight ladies. I had low amniotic fluid with DS but each pregnancy is different, so who knows...we shall see what the US reveals in a few weeks. :)
  • My doctor has never measured my fundal height (I'm 23 weeks) and only does the Doppler at our appointments. Should I be asking for this?

Mine starts at 24 weeks. There's not really much to measure before that since the uterus is growing up (towards the ribs) instead of out.

Thank you! Probably shouldn't be lurking from May 16 and freaking myself out :)
