Nipple flow

Is anyone else considering switching to fast flow nipples? DH and I didn't even realize this was a thing and so DS1 was on slow flow until after 6 months and never had a problem. However, DS2 gets very frustrated on the bottle and really distracted, it can take him up to an hour to finish one.  I know he is hungry but he almost seems to get bored after 3 ounces or so and just kind of stops only to get hungry an hour later, he used to eat 6 ounces every 3 or 4 ounces.  My frustration is mostly stemming from the fact that all these missed daytime ounces are being made up at night.  I don't mind getting up obviously, he is a great sleeper but I feel like I'm not even able to work towards dropping a feed because he really needs that food.  I tried one fast flow nipple and he did fine and ate the whole thing, no choking or spitting but I'm still worried its too early.  He is 5 months.

Re: Nipple flow

  • What level are you on? We moved to level 2 ten days ago. 16 weeks
  • Loading the player...
  • We have been using stage 2 for a few weeks... Big difference. He eats much faster now. I EP and the faster nips make life more bearable!
  • These are fast flow.  The playtex bottles I use are slow, medium (we have been using these since just after 3 months) and fast.  I assume equivalent to a level 3 then? Were your LOs acting similar before you changed? I feel like I should know these things but my boys are so different from one another that I have completely new questions this time around lol.
  • I just went up to medium at 16 weeks
  • We just switched to Stage 2, 20 weeks.

  • Everyone who switched to Stage 2, are you also breastfeeding? My 19-week-old takes awhile to finish his bottles (Stage 1), but I don't want it to interfere with breastfeeding since it'll be easier for him to drink from the bottle vs. nursing.
  • @ElleMF728 we switched because he acted annoyed sometimes when eating, like it was too much work. He and we are just so much happier!

@jen83mn I EP but that said, I do occasionally BF if the time is right. He's never had a great latch so it's a lot of work for both of us. I could see that giving a faster nipple could mess up BFing. Unless you also have a fast flow and let down. I'd be cautious.
  • Breast fed babies are not supposed to move up in nipple sizes. They will begin to prefer the bottle because it's a lot less work for them. We did this on accident with my son because we didn't know and here we are at 17 weeks and he screams at my boob. The ped told us we shouldn't have moved up nipple sizes.
  • Level one was looking like it was difficult so we moved to level two at 15 weeks. We had to it back an ounce as she was throwing up after each bottle but after that she has been fine

  • @dmbfan46835 That's basically what DS2 is doing.  Its like he gets annoyed or bored halfway thru and just stops. Apparently he has better things to do and see and doesn't want to spend as much time eating lol.  I think I'm going to try out the faster nipples for a day or two, see how he does, and then reevaluate.
  • Opposite here. We just went to a preemie nipple cuz I'm trying to get baby back to breast. Is he in a leap? Fussy/distracted eating is a symptom of that too, as is more wakefulness at night. My guy wakes up so often at night now and eats a quarter oz before going back to sleep. So annoying haha.

I'm pretty sure he is out of his 4th leap.  He is napping normally and falling asleep normally during the day and at bedtime.  He is a tiny bit more fussy but I'm pretty sure that is related to the tooth that is coming in.  He is also out of the age range at 23 weeks but it could still definitely be possible.  TBH I really don't know, this kid is tough to figure out.  He is a really happy baby so even when he is struggling with something it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what it is! If this doesn't work I'm going to chalk it up to that and just go with it.
  • According to the app, the next leap starts between 22 1/2 and 26 1/2 weeks lol. Not much of a break in between!
  • @callistosmile wonderful haha!  That may be what we are dealing with then.  I haven't checked my wonder week app since the last one and didn't realize how close together they were!  I'm going to have to take a look and see if I notice any other behaviors or skills that may indicate another leap.  Thanks for the tip, the thought of entering leap 5 seriously never even crossed my mind.
