Target

There's been a couple threads this week about SPD. I have this and now that baby has dropped, it's extremely painful even to roll over in bed. When I walk, it's more of a shuffle because raising my feet hurts. I also have tachycardia which causes shortness of breath. This causes further issues with walking. I can't walk more than a few hundred feet before losing my breath and needing to sit down.

I've resorted to using the motorized cart at the grocery store. It was embarrassing but so is having to sit down in the floor in the middle of the store. Well...I went to Target the other day and I realized they don't have these motorized carts. They do have wheelchairs at guest services, but they don't have carts on them so there's no way to shop.

I'm wondering if you other Target-shopping mamas have noticed if your stores have the carts or not. I posted on their facebook page and have been called entitled, extreme, and told that I shouldn't even be out because I've said I can't shop there until my baby is born. It's really an issue of them basically excluding disabled people from shopping there (not that I'm calling myself disabled mind you).

Re: Target

  • Our target has them, but they are locked up and you have to prove that you need it. I saw a woman on crutches ask for one and because she was "younger" they basically said no. People never really understand the struggles someone else goes through and I don't think it's fair for stores to deny motorized carts or to just not have them. That's ridiculous.
You are definitely not entitled either.

That's what prompted me to make my post. I went in the other day to try to buy one item and they don't have them. All my store has is regular wheelchairs which are useless if you're buying more than one item. I noticed it Sunday when I went to buy lots of stuff and had to sit on an endcap to catch my breath.

  • I can't believe someone called you entitled! Ugh, some people just have no idea.
  • I remember a comment online about the maternity parking spaces some places have. Something along the lines of "pregnant women need exercise too." Ugh. Yeah, clueless.

  • Our target has at least 4 of them.
  • Um no I hate when people complain about pregnant women using those spaces. Not every woman who is pregnant has an easy time and can just walk everywhere. I've began to use those spaces if they are available and I don't care. It HURTS and is downright hard to walk sometimes at this point. Besides I won't be using them forever only a few weeks at the most.
  • The Targets in my area haven't had expectant mothers parking since the mid-90's. I wish they did.

  • Honestly, I think parking for people with small children is more important than expectant mothers parking (I've seen some places that are labeled as both). Just because it's a safety issue trekking little kids through a parking lot. If you're pregnant you're going to have to walk around the store anyway. I'm not relating this to you @DrillSergeantCat, obviously you have a special circumstance. I was more talking about the expectant mothers parking comments. I've seen people at our Target in carts but they were elderly so I'm not sure the rules on who can/can't use them. I would think if someone asks, they would be required to say yes. Seems risky to turn people down. If that person was hurt they could be in some big trouble.

I'm just really sorry for the way you were treated. Crappy. I'm sorry.

I guess I'm just shocked lately in general at some peoples' inability to understand that one woman's pregnancy might feel different than their own!

  • I can't ever recall seeing motorized carts at our local target to be honest. Nor have I ever seen wheelchairs at their customer service desk. Though I would think it would be risky for them to deny you access to one...

I can't believe people actually have you a hard time when you posted on their Facebook page. Absolutely ridiculous!
  • Target's typically have them. The smaller stores may only have two or three and often all of them may be used at any given time. I worked at a Target where we actually had 3 out of 5 stolen within a week. It was really hard having people need them and not being able to help. We did have normal wheelchairs and in cases where people could not wheel themselves we would often have a team member offer to go gather items of the guest. It made it more difficult for the guest as they couldn't browse, but was basically all we could do under the circumstances.
  • Sort of related to this thread - I found out this weekend that Target does not have a changing table in the men's bathroom, only in the women's bathroom and the family bathroom.  Total BS.  I'm thinking of writing to them.

Usually, I change my son in public bathrooms because I know it's hit or miss if there's going to be a changing table in the men's bathroom.  But, lately, it's been getting hard to lift him and wrangle him on that high table, so I've been relying on hubby to do it.

This weekend, when we were in Target, there was someone taking forever in the family bathroom (I've been that person, with a potty-training toddler, so I'm not judging), so I asked DH if he could take my 2.5 year old into the men's room and change him.  He came right back out and said there was no changing table in there.  I'm surprised a store like Target doesn't have a changing table in the men's room.

  • @Life is Exciting did DH happen to look in the handicapped stall? (I'm sure after 2.5 years, he knows where to look, but just asking) My DH has learned that because the urinals take up wall space, a lot of the time the changing table is hung in the handicapped stall as an after thought (this happens in some women's rooms too).

I have SPD and honestly I would consider it a short term disability. I've had to go down to part time work (I'm self employed in a labor intensive job), and sometimes grocery shopping makes me want to cry thinking of all the crouching I have to do to get things off lower shelves or lift dog food.

It has given me even more appreciation for those living with chronic pain or mobility issues.

Although I have yet to use any of the mobile carts, I'm sad that Target does not provide them for long or short term disabled customers.
  • PM me the store you were at. I have a friend who's a district manager for Target and will pass on the info. That just isn't right, and it's definitely a potential lawsuit if someone were to fall and further injure themselves in their store if they didn't provide the appropriate items.

  • It's sad to learn first-hand how awful disability resources are... :/ I'm not proud to acknowledge that I've noticed this during my pregnancy more than I had previously.

Thanks for the tip, @SgtLou2.  I'll ask him if he looked in there.  If it was occupied, he may not have.

Today my friend saw someone PARKED in the blue lines in between the handicap space and the crosswalk at a target. I think they really need to get serious about enforcing their rules, inside and outside of the store. The poor guy couldn't get back in his van because this jerk parked in the access aisle. Blue lines do NOT mean park! Especially when they're labeled "access aisle" I mean, what?!
I wonder if their store also doesn't have the motorized chairs w/carts.. I should ask her. It just seems like common courtesy. I keep forgetting that logic is no longer used. it makes me kind of scared for when my daughter grows up. We can only do so much to prevent her from being one of "them".
