18 weeks and still no kicks / flutters. How concerned should I be?

I am a FTM, 18w 3d today and still have not felt flutters/kicks like everyone else is reporting. Doc and nurse seemed surprised as well that I haven't felt anything yet. How concerned should I be?

Have you had a Drs appt with a Doppler or an u/s? If yes and all was normal, I wouldn't worry. If no, get it checked at least to ease your mind. I'm 17+6 and I haven't felt any definitive kicks. Also the placement of your placenta (ex: anterior) has to do with when you feel kicks and how strongly you feel them. If both the dr and nurse aren't worried enough to do further testing than I wouldn't worry too much

  • With my first pregnancy I don't think I felt anything until 22-25 weeks. It took forever. I'm pretty sure I had an anterior placenta, which as PP said makes it harder to feel anything. You're most likely fine, and in the normal range for feeling movement.
  • I felt my first baby around 16 weeks and my second baby around 21-22 weeks. (Reason I couldn't feel the second one is that my placenta was in the front, and when baby was kicking, he was kicking my placenta...OHHH that explains it!) I JUST started really feeling this one and I am 19 and a half weeks. I know it's a little unnerving but--just know, 1. as a FTM, its difficult to decipher exactly what THAT feeling is...it might take longer to be obvious to you...and 2. there are reasons you may not feel baby other than anything problematic 3. It could already be a sign of your baby's personality. (Not sure if there is scientific truth to that) BUT my first one is my CRAZY bouncing-off-the-walls one, and he happened to be the one I felt the MOST. With this baby, My midwife asked me at 15 weeks if I felt the baby yet...I said no...then it worried me. But his heartbeat has been great and I have seen him alive and well on the ultrasounds so--not as worried anymore.
  • I agree with the anterior placenta comments! This is my 4th baby, so you'd think I'd feel a lot. But nope, I have an anterior (attached in the front) placenta his time. And I really don't feel much at all! Yet on ultrasounds, baby is kicking away. I'm 19 weeks.
  • FTM 19 weeks and haven't really felt much of what I was certain was movement until literally today after panicking all weekend that my OB wasn't going to find a heart beat at today's appointment. Of course right after he checked (and heard the heart beat) and I sat up I felt 3 little kicks that felt like I'm getting poked from inside. It'll happen! Everything I read said not to really expect to know until about 20 weeks. But yes, the waiting is terrible.
  • Ugh, this is driving me nuts too.  I'm nearly 19 weeks and a FTM.  I have 1 - 2 moments during the day where I swear I feel something from the baby...it isn't gas or hunger but it could be RLP or sometimes I worry that it is just my heartbeat pounding away in my stomach (I notice I feel my heartbeat down in my uterus area a LOT now).  I just wish it was more definite.  I also can't feel anything externally yet to try and have H confirm it.
  • I am 19 weeks today and this was the first day that I could say for sure I felt it moving for most of the day. It begins as little wiggles, which you think are gas bubbles, then starts feeling like pokes or taps, and finally graduates to a rolling sensation, or at least that's where I am. I read that external sensation doesn't occur until 22-24 weeks, so my DH is waiting patiently for his turn. I know how anxious you must feel. My mother claimed she felt me at 12 weeks and I gave her the side-eye. It will all happen in due time my friend. *Hugs*
  • You may have an anterior placenta which is what I had last time. You can't feel the baby as soon because the placenta is in front and baby has to get big enough to kick hard enough for you to feel it through the placenta. If you're worried, you can always call but I'll bet that's the reason. GL!

  • Thanks ladies! I'm trying to be patient and not worry but it gets harder as time goes on and your mind starts to wonder 'what if'. @alysemciver U/S and Doppler has been normal so far & due to go back later this month to find out gender. Hopefully any day now! Thank you again

I'm 18 weeks and 5 days today and I haven't felt anything also a FTM and I was told I have anterior placenta. The waiting stinks! I lay down still in a quiet room and put my hand on my tummy waiting to feel something but still haven't :(

  • 18 weeks is still actually early for a lot of FTMs. Sounds like based on your apt everything is fine and I agree with pp about the possibility of an AP. It'll happen! :)
  • This is my third, 19 weeks today and I'm still not feeling much either. All three times I've felt like I've been waiting forever! Don't worry, soon enough you'll be feeling it all the time.

This is my third also and I'm almost 18 weeks and only the past few days have I started to feel anything. So, don't fret! :)
  • I'm glad you brought this up as I was coming on here to ask the same thing! I'm 19 weeks and not sure I have felt anything either. We have our 20 week ultrasound next Monday which will help with seeing the LO but it's hard not to think there is something wrong until then.
  • To answer your question; not concerned at all.

  • I imagine you're just fine.  I worry about everything. This one kicks me every day but I worry that something is up because he/she has been doing it since 15 weeks and it's always LOW.  I'm like "are you okay down there???" anyway, I think we moms-to-be worry about every little thing so I totally sympathize but it sounds pretty common to me.  I think it was between 17 + 18 weeks with my daughter.  You'll know :)  Good luck!
  • Not to worry! This is baby #3 for me and I am still not sure if I am feeling the baby move. What I feel is so light it almost feels like a slight muscle twitch. I am 18 weeks and 4 days today and just had my BIG u/s. Baby looks great and I asked if my placenta was in front and the tech told me nope it is in the back.

  • Although I have felt the little kicks, many women don't feel them until much later, like 22-25 weeks. I wouldn't worry.

  • I had an appointment last Friday (19weeks) and he was moving all over the place and I didn't feel a darn thing. So if your doctor isn't worried about it, I wouldn't worry either.
  • I'm so glad you posted, I am 18 weeks and 1 day FTM and was getting soooooo nervous about my appt in 4 days because I haven't felt anything yet! I'll try and calm down lol! I'm so anxious/excited to feel her!
  • Yesterday and now today I have felt little pokes near my belly button I'm wondering if it's baby kicks I'm feeling I can't really tell if it is or it's just me stretching or it is me wishing it was baby kicks

  • I'm 19w3d and only for the last week and a half have I felt anything. I mean, previously to that I felt little pops and flutters but I couldn't be sure they weren't gas. (And this is my third baby so you'd think I'd be able to tell by now!) It surprised me a little bit to have it go so late, but it's definitely gotten more noticeable lately. Every body is different, and like others have said, if you have an anterior placenta you're not going to feel anything until later because it's all being cushioned.
