8 weeks and gained 10 lbs!

Please please help
I am already gaining weight
Partially bc my dr has stopped me from excercising because of my history with miscarriage. I was doing orange theory 3x a week and eating 1200 cal daily
Now that has changed I am sick all day and tend to eat whatever but after stepping off the scale this morning this can not continue.
I gained 47 lbs with my first pregnancy and it took 3 years to get rid of. It put a huge strain on my Marriage and my self esteem. The day I found out I was pregnant I was at my lowest weight in and felt great, I had so much energy and wanted this high throughout my pregnancy.
Can anyone provide me with there routines that are safe? Where should my heart rate be? Is it possible not to gain anymore and lose? I saw coco but I'm sure that's not realistic I just can not fathom the idea of gaining anymore

Re: 8 weeks and gained 10 lbs!

  • I hate to say this, but you need to listen to your doc. After 1st tri they may release you to exercise. I would keep your hr between 150-160, but since it's a sensitive situation I would consult with your doctor.

It's possible the 10 lbs is mostly bloat. Drink water like it's your job and try to fool yourself into eating more fruits and veggies! Weight gain can be such a frustrating thing. You may not want to focus on the scale, and just try to be healthy.

  • My doctor told me to not get my heart rate above 140 but that mild exercise like walking was still ok. Maybe you should count calories but allow for 2000 a day.
  • We can't tell you "where your heart rate should be" and "routines that are safe" since it sounds like you've got some extenuating circumstances.

You need to ask your doctor these questions - not us. If you're on restricted activity, there's a reason for it and it would be pretty irresponsible of any of us to tell you what -we- think is safe in your situation.

As far as the eating goes, just make better choices. Unfortunately, you may just have to eat what you can eat until the morning sickness wears off. Something to keep in mind, too, is that some of that weight gain is likely bloat and will resolve on its own.

  • Don't do much exercise if you've been told not to. Maybe see if walking or light yoga is okay, but beyond that, it sounds like you're high risk. Don't obsess over calories. 1200 wasn't enough even when you weren't pregnant. I'll never understand where that number comes from. Try to eat what you can.

If it helps any, I was 135 lbs pre pregnancy, and weighed at 155 at my first appointment. That's a 20 lb gain. I haven't gained but a pound since, and that gain actually seemed to be good for me as 135 is tiny for my frame. I know weight gain is stressful. Believe me. But right now, do what the doctor ordered
  • Did your doc give you an idea of when it would be OK to at least begin some light exercises? Like walking or pre-natal yoga?

Don't stress yourself out, that will just make things worse and right now all you need to do is take it easy. For now I would say, just focus on eating healthy, but don't completely deprive yourself of an indulgence here and there (in moderation if your scared).

I bought the Tracy Anderson Pregnancy Project DVDs on Amazon.com. It's 9 DVDs, set up with a different DVD each month. The ones in the beginning are supposed to be really gentle, since you're technically supposed to be feeling not so hot. I haven't started them yet, but with my first pregnancy I did very little exercise, just walking. During the delivery I promised myself I would exercise more next time around just to build up that stamina! Good lord I was exhausted mid-way through the first time around. Check them out, perhaps it's a program your doc would give the thumbs up to and you can get in your exercise. HTH!

Can you do yoga or walk on a treadmill? I am right around 8 weeks also and haven't had any restrictions to working out, but I have really toned down and have done specific prenatal workouts and yoga/Pilates. So far I haven't gained any weight, however I just haven't had much of an appetite. What were you doing before in your diet? I can't imagine it would change too much, unless you physically can't tolerate what you were eating..

  • I think that stopping working out for a while will not cause you to gain tons of weight. The main thing is definitely WHAT you eat. So, avoid processed foods and fill up on lots of veggies and healthy proteins (hard to take my own advice haha). Drink lots of water. If you drink other sugary drinks cut that out. There's no way you will gain a lot of weight if you eat really healthy. By eating healthy I don't mean minimal calories, just healthy foods. Think about what you are eating as being what you are feeding your baby. Try not to stress over your weight as that won't help anything. Wishing you a healthy and happy pregnancy!
