STM, 36 weeks

I went to my regular  36 week OB check up yesterday and was told I was already 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced. With my first I was checked on a Monday and was the exact same measurements, but farther along in my pregnancy (38 weeks) and I ended up having her that Friday. So needless to say I am nervous and thrilled to say we might actually have a January baby! I do however realize that you can stay at the same measurements until well past your due date, but based on my last pregnancy they seem to think she is coming within the next few weeks....aghhhh. I cannot even wrap my mind around this. I am about to have two little ones.  I do have some concerns, My husband works out of town so this whole time I have been worried he will be away when I need to go to the hospital and for real  (this may seem like a good thing, but for me its a scary bad thing) when I have contractions (real ones- they do not ever hurt) last time I barely made it to the hospital cause I didn't believe my labor was real because I expected some pain. So I was told to pay very close attention to my  contractions this time around..... Sorry for the rant, but I had to get it out. I am going to stay positive and believe that everything is going to work out as it should.

Re: STM, 36 weeks

  • That's some great progress. Like you said, it could be any time. Is your OB comfortable allowing you to deliver at any point or does he/she want you to go in to stop labor?

  • They said I can go now, there should be no reason to stop labor at this point. I asked about NICU stay, but he said more than likely the baby would just fine and not need NICU and they are just packing on pounds now and getting the sucking reflex down. So fingers crossed I can make until next Friday, my last day of scheduled work. Either way I know its not up to me :) Are you being induced? or are they going to let you go until your babies are ready to come on their own?

  • I'm going to be having a c section. Babies aren't cooperating with positioning, so vaginal isn't really an option. I have a couple of appointments tomorrow that will determine if we stick to our scheduled date (Jan 22) or move it up to the end of this week. Based on my NST yesterday and the growth concerns (the reason for appointments tomorrow) I'm pretty sure they will be here this week.

I was induced with my son at exactly 36 weeks and he was perfectly healthy.  no extended hospital stay or anything.  had no problems nursing.  just a tiny bit of jaundice, but easily fixable.  Just some words that will hopefully be encouraging to you.  how far away does your hubby work?  hopefully this time, you'll recognize the signs that you're going into labor since you've felt them before.

  • @jadkins2 what do your contractions feel like? I'm a STM too and with my first I was induced but never felt any real contractions but had severe back labor. So I too worry about not getting there on time. Went to my 36 week appt today and was 1cm and 50%effaced. Which I know could mean labor is still weeks away but I was excited because I was thick and closed at my induction. Also I feel like my BH have been getting more frequent and stronger.
  • My hubby works in entire southeast region so I could be 4 hours away to 8 depending on the week. He is going to be local though starting next week thanks to my apt yesterday. They feel just like BH. that's it...no pain just tightening...last time I was at work and just noticed I was having them back to back. when I got to the Hospital I was already 7 CM. Glad my mom told me to come in or I would have had her at work probably! My worst fear!
  • Download a contraction tracking app. I'm using Full Term. When you have a contraction, regardless of how painless, hit the button to time it. Ask your doctor at what point you should go to L&D. A friend of mine was told minute long contractions 5-6 minutes apart. Maybe having an app will help.

  • My doctors office doesn't do routine checks (only if you ask) because it doesn't tell anything and you could be getting disappointed or excited for nothing. So I wouldn't base baby's arrival on your measurements.
Also, I sort of know what you mean about the contractions. With my last one (which was 3rd baby) my contractions hurt but only during the contraction and it wasn't too bad. And then I was back to "normal" in between. And they weren't super regular. Everyone including myself was surprised to find out I was ready to push when I went into my doctors office. It's nice to have some more warning about what's going on!

  • That's good progress! I got checked yesterday and I've made zero progress :( no dilation or effacement so that sucks :( I had to be induced with my first and don't want to go through that again!

  • Thanks for the app recommendation I will def.  do that because lord knows having a two year old makes it hard to pay attention to yourself most of the time. @purpletuIip am not getting my hopes up too much I am just really excited my body is doing as it should and anxious to be done being pregnant!

Exactly my thoughts! I hate to see someone get checked and then feel like it's going to happen sooner than later only to get disappointed and frustrated when they go past their due date, not that OP will, but the cervix is not a crystal ball ;)
