Anyone here using Essential Oils?

So I used the handy dandy search bar, but I didn't find anything recent (i.e. before april of last year and was only 3-4 comments deep....)

Just wondering if any of you ladies are using them, and if so, what oils/blends/products are you using? What do you find to help with aches & pains, trouble sleeping or getting your body to relax? Normal stuff like that :)

My sister got DH and I a starter kit, as she SWEARS by them, and I've been having back aches and migraines. She's a little bit of a drive from us, so we haven't actually been able to get together so she can tell me what oil is for what and how much to use. I do like the idea of being able to diffuse the different ones to help calm our home, but I'm not big on trading them out traditional medicines (just to make THAT clear lol). And no, I'm not trying to sell you guys on them either. We received them as a gift, and I'm just curious to see if anyone else has used them :)

Thanks!!

Re: Anyone here using Essential Oils?

  • I love my essential oils! Lemongrass is great for aches, deep blue (do Terra) also. Lavender in an Epsom salt bath is good for relaxation, cinnamon is unsafe during pregnancy, though I don't know why. If you're getting a cold (like I'm currently fighting) and can't take cold medicine, diluted oregano and melaleuca on the bottoms of your feet.

  • I'm waiting to get the carrier oil so I can make a roller (my sister does Young Living, so I'll take what she gives me lol) for aches and pains. But I'll definitely do an Epsom salt and lavender bath tomorrow!!

  • I love oils! I started using them when I went off my anxiety meds when we started trying to get pregnant. And have used them for colds, allergies and relaxation since getting pregnant! I second the deep blue/lemongrass for pain. Lavender for calming, I diffuse that when I'm sleeping to help me stay asleep! Stephanie Fritz (a midwife) has a book about using oils during pregnancy that I've found helpful :)
  • The website www.Scentsablehealth.com is a great resource by a certified aroma therapist. She actually has a few blends just for pregnant mommas! There is a huge list of things not safe in pregnancy and you can find it there. Love me some EOs
  • I also use Young Living and absolutely love Lavender! I didn't use any in my
First trimester and there are a few
That are not safe anytime during pregnancy (mostly due to affecting blood pressure, bleeding, causing uterine contractions). Lavender is universally known as a safe oil but I still dilute it with a carrier oil as I would
    For a child.
  • I recently went to an essential oils party and there was a doTerra rep there and she said that deep blue is unsafe for pregnancy so just be careful!  She wouldn't even let me smell it.

However, peppermint oil is great for morning sickness and I think headaches.  Dab one drop on your wrist and just breathe it in.  Lemon is also good for morning sickness. Lavender for relaxation is a great choice as well!
  • Be careful with eo during pregancy. Many arent great during pregnancy. Clary sage, rosemary (many of thhe herby oils are not great for pregnancy especially if you are prone to mc) deep blue bc of wintergreen is not safe to be used. Your skin gwts more sensitive during pregnancy so i dulite every thing i use in myself (includong lavaender and serenity-doterra blend, roman chamomile and frank) def do your research and dont just trust bc they give them to you they are safe because not everyone who is a yl or dt rep know whats ok for pregnancy and what mightbnot be great.
Dont get me wrong. I love my oils but i am very cautious. I truly believe they helped me get pregnant but now that i am ising much less. And with everything talk to your ob. And make sure you use a good safe brand. Yl and doterra are both great brands.

  • My sister is also big into oils. She makes and sells soaps, bath bombs and lotion bars that she makes herself. For Christmas she gave me two jars (one large and one mini to keep in my purse) of peppermint and lavender mixed with some sort of carrier (I think coconut oil). It's like a rub to rub on temples and the back of your neck for headaches. I used a little this weekend when I had a headache and it did work. She also made some vanilla lavender soap and peppermint bath bombs. She also made a pain relief pillow. It's filled with rice and some lavender and peppermint essential oils. You heat it up in the microwave and then put it wherever you're having pain. I haven't tried that yet but I imagine it would help for back pain.
  • Also peppermint is great now but it can decrease milk supply towards the end of pregancy so dont use it if you are planning on nursing.

  • I heart EOs! We've been using doTerra for several years and the Serenity blend is wonderful for sleep. Be careful using it on kids, though, as lavender can cause vivid dreams. Our son (6) wakes up from nightmares when using it (even very diluted), but our daughter (8) is fine with it.

Like PPs have said, the mints can cause issues in PG, so be VERY careful with those. The herbs can cause contractions, so stay away. Otherwise, use caution, but they can be a great source of relief when we can't do much else.
  • Thanks ladies!! My sister is a YL rep and she's done tons of research as to what's safe for pregnancy (both during and post), as well as what's safe for kids. The YL look book actually has several pages of pregnancy safe oils and blends, tells you how to dilute them so they're safer for your skin and such.

  • I love my Young living oils! Peppermint has been my saving grace for headaches. And stress away is amazing. I usually put it under my nose it helps me more to smell it. I use peace and calming and lavender at night. A really good book is Gentle Babies. It tells you how to use them while pregnant and how to use them on newborns. I have a pain cream for aches and pains made from the oils.

  • I love my oils! I put lemon and lavender in my diffuser every night before I go to bed. I've been pretty cautious with them since I got pregnant since my OB doesn't know much about them.
  • Thank you all so much!!! If you don't mind sharing, how do you mix your blends? How many drops of what plus the carrier oil (if any) and what do you use it for? I'm having lunch with my sister tomorrow, so I'll get some of the blends from her, but I figured it might be cool to share here :)

  • I look on Pinterest or ask my "dealer" (DHs cousin and one of my BFFs) for recipes. You can also find recipes on doTerra's site, but it takes some searching.
  • Pinterest is awesome for finding blends and ideas. I've got a whole board dedicated to it! If you search "oils for pregnancy" or "oils for babies" you'll find lots of advice and safety information. I personally use Young Living and love the brand. Peppermint and lemon has been my go to in the morning for a pick me up these days.

Usually I do only 3 drops EO to 600 (1oz) carrier, but I heavily dilute as if giving them to my 2 year old as the EOs do cross the placenta. Some say you can still take orally but I don't and would suggest that if you are just starting out you don't either. Low and slow Is the game here. Hope that helps! Edit- I wrote 6 instead of 600
  •  I started Doterra oils right before I found out I was preggers. I stopped using all of them in fear of hurting the baby but I am going to start diffusing lavender to help with my recent in bed 8 hours get maybe 3 asleep every night. This mama needs her ZZZs

  • I am loving Past Tense (doterra) and lavender, I use both every night. I've had really bad restless legs during my pregnancy and Past Tense is the only thing that helps.
  • I LOVE OILS!  I use peppermint and lavender mostly.  I know we are talking about us mamas but for future, best teething roller 1-2 drops lavender, 1 drop frankincense and coconut oil in a roller and when baby is teething, roll it on their jaw..oh my gosh, this has been a lifesaver in our house.  You can also use it when baby is fussy!
  • Carrier oil..... Use olive oil. Yes, the kind you cook with! Totally works.
  • I am a Wellness Advocate for doTerra. I love my essential oils and still use them. Some are not safe during pregnancy, but others are a great help <3
