Weirdest thing just happened...

The first day of my last period was November 16th, so by that theory my due date should have been August 22ND and I would technically be 8 weeks today. BUT I just had my first ultrasound today and Dr. said I am showing to be only 6 weeks pregnant. Honestly, I'm blindsided and disappointed, being that I thought I was further along. Has this happened to anyone here? He said that it might have to do with what time I ovulated, but I feel 2 weeks is such a big window... Idk, I'm just very confused...

Did you temp to confirm ovulation? Basing your edd off of your LMP assumes a "normal" 28 day cycle with ovulation on day 14. Tbh, most women don't actually have a28 day cycle. If you have longer cycles you may not ovulate until maybe day 28(this would line up for you) and your cycle would be somewhere closer to 42 days. This is still completely normal as long as your LP(the time after your ovulation and before your period) stays pretty consistent.

  • I can understand your discouragement, but as PP said, everything revolves around when you ovulated. A few of my friends delivered at 42 weeks, so the extra days in the grand scheme of pregnancy won't be that daunting in the long run. Always treat your EDD as an estimation! You're setting yourself up for future disappointment if you think Mother Nature will be punctual. For my son, I would always tell ppl "the beginning of June" as a due date instead of June 6th. Throughout my pregnancy I received 3 different due dates and that's why I resorted to the vague time frame when people would ask.

This. It's called "estimated due date" for a reason.

  • My EDD last time was June 5.  DS showed up 6 weeks early on April 27.  I wouldn't put too much stock into that date, and as others have mentioned it depends on when you ovulate :)

  • I delivered 10 days late last time, but honestly we based that off of LMP and I do not have a cycle duration (I don't ovulate so I use Provera and Clomid to induce menstruation and ovulation) and typically ovulate a little slower than the typical reaction.  As for this pregnancy my LMP was November 27, but I didn't ovulate until around cycle day 21, which puts me a week behind what my OB will calculate using LMP.  Unless you are super sure of when you ovulated, I wouldn't be too concerned!

I totally agree that an estimated due date is just an estimation, but I think that is being taken a little out of context here. Early dating scans are extremely accurate in terms of fetal growth. So while an EDD doesn't mean much in terms of when your baby will actually be born, it is a very accurate predictor of when you conceived.

ETA: sorry, I'm having issues understanding things this morning. When I first read through it seemed like people were suggesting that the US result doesn't mean anything because babies don't come when they're due. I was just trying to point out that the US probably wasn't wrong. Not sure if it came out right.
  • @0SeaMonkey0 - You're right and I hope my response didn't sound like I was doubting the dating ultrasound.. I'm curious about date of conception and time between that and ultrasound!

  • @diagonalley I knew I recognized your name and avatar!! You were on the June '14 board, correct?
  • With my DD my EDD was 12/16 and I always thought it should've been a week earlier. At the end, she was born 3 wks earlier than my EDD at 6lbs 13 oz with no problems. I wouldn't stress about the EDD unless you Doctor is concerned.

  • Just reiterating what PP said, going by LMP alone doesn't work for most. I have extremely long cycles (60-90 day range). My first was a Sept '14 baby and my LMP for her was in Sept '13. Based on LMP this go, I'd have a late July/early Aug EDD (betas confirmed I'm not that far along).

More stories, just because. My mom and I both have PCOS which tends to cause long cycles and irregular ovulation. When they dated my first pregnancy based on LMP I had a due date of 8/8 but i knew that was wrong so I had a dating scan and my due date was adjusted to 8/26. DS was born 9/4. Like me, my mom temped to get pregnant and knew her ovulation date. With me and my sister the Drs used her o date and got due dates within a couple of weeks of the actual birth. With my youngest a new dr refused to use the O date so she went her whole pregnancy with a May 20 due date and my youngest sister was born June 18th!
  • Yes ma'am :) Nice to see you again @RedMar!

I haven't read the other responses yet because I'm in a time crunch, but this happened with my daughter. She was two weeks behind the date based on LMP and we had to have 2 more ultrasounds before it was decided she was growing fine and I must've just ovulated late. My current pregnancy I already know I ovulated two weeks late, so this little one will be behind the date based on LMP by two weeks too!! Try no to worry and know this is not necessarily a bad sign!!!

  • This happened to me... then every appointment after my daughter showed to be two weeks early. Guess when she was born aug 21 not sept 6.
  • @diagonalley- good to see you and congrats again :)!
  • This happened to me and it didn't end well. However, I knew that I couldn't have ovulated late bc DH was out of town during the TTW. I read countess posts about women who knew when they ovulated and it didn't match the dating scan and they still had healthy babies. Every person and every pregnancy is different. Ts & ps for you.
  • After reading these responses, I think I'm in this same boat. With DS I was sure of my LMP with 26 day cycles and my O date was CD13. They scared me a bit bc he was measuring small until we hit a certain time. Then he was on point. Now, he's 4 and the size of a 5 year old.

Now that I look back to the last few months, my cycle days have been off. I always base it on 26 days bc that was my usual. I was on BCP for awhile until I lost my insurance. I'm wondering if I ovulated earlier than what I thought. I don't track when we have sex bc we were definitely not TTC.
