HSG results- left tube blocked :(

Well i survived the test! It wasn't that bad until the end when i started cramping pretty bad. It showed one blocked tube.. I am thinking maybe the right was blocked as well since he needed to put a wire thing into it to get it to go through.. I am really worried.. I wanted to do IUI but i am not sure what my options are now.. is that even a possibility..  can they track which side you are going to O from each month.. I am trying to be hopeful with the fact only one is blocked and not both.. Can the hsg help to unblock the one  or would that of had to been done by him?  I don't know if that makes sense what i am asking..  so worried there may be no options but ivf..  help!

Re: HSG results- left tube blocked :(

  • Hi @runner76.  I had a blocked tube due to a corneal polyp, and that lead me to switching to IVF.  While I still had one good side, I was ovulating on the "bad" side every single previous month.  This made the odds even slimmer for IUIs to be a success.  Have you all seen which side your follicles seem to grow the best?  IUI usually garners 1-2 follicles/eggs typically, so for the IUI to be optimal, you need to to have the good follicles growing on the side of your clear tube.

I was given chances of IUI working from 2-5% and IVF 40-50%.  Time is not on my side due to my age, so we went with IVF.  Good luck and get as much information as possible from your RE!

  • time is definitely not on my side .. I'm gonna be 40 in august :(   how can they tell which side you are o from?  Can he tell that with the ultrasound? i only had one ( the cd 3 blood and US)  so you don't always alternate which side you o from.. it can be same every month???
  • he messaged and said i have hydosalpinx on left side.. this is bad i think :(((
  • Sorry to hear about your diagnosis @runner76. Hydrosalpinx means your left tube is blocked with fluid. The good news is your right tube is open even if it had to be open mechanically (with the wire). It is possible to still do an IUI with one open tube. The RE can stimulate both ovaries to produce follicles regardless of which side your ovulating on for that month and then induce ovulation with an HSG trigger shot. I was able to get pregnant with this protocol but it subsequently ended in an ectopic which is one of the risks. I'm now doing IVF.
Definitely talk to your RE about doing IUI and see what he thinks your chances are now that you have a diagnosis. It could be higher than you think and a chance worth taking. Hope this helps. GL!
  • Are U sure ? What I read was that one tube with fluid can cause issue for embryo. Was that why you're ended in ectopic ? So scary. I meet with dr Monday. I read usually the remove either one or two tubes. I feel hopeless
  • I had a blocked left tube with hydrosalpinx as well. My RE brought me in for a salpingectomy to remove the blocked tube, but found stage 4 endometriosis and was unable to remove it - had to put a coil in to prevent more ectopic pregnancy (I had one previously, not sure which side).

My doctor thought, given enough time, the right tube might get the job done, but my endo was so severe he didn't want me risking a lot of time TTCing since my uterus was healthy and the right tube was already scarred. We ended up going the ivf route.

@runnergirl79 It just depends on where the fluid is in the tube. If the blockage is near the ovaries then it won't cause harm to the embryo if it's at the end of the tube entering the uterus then yes that could harm the embryo and lead to mc or other complications. My RE explained all of this to me and I read up on it too.
Again, now that u have a diagnosis, your RE will tell u for sure if attempting IUI is possible and what your next step will be in the process. Take a list of questions with u when you talk with him again and even ask him about what you read on Dr. Google :-) they know we research this stuff and a good RE is willing to have that kind of discussion with you so your both on the same page.
If your not happy with his plan, seek a second opinion. As you'll find reading through the forum each RE has their own unique formula they think will work to treat our infertility.
I'm on my 3rd RE and he's awesome. He was the only RE that diagnosed me and has tried to help me get pregnant using less invasive and inexpensive methods first. Once he opened my tube he said I had about a 6 month window TTC with IUI before it would close again. The EC happened in the 4th month of that window. It definitely sucked going through all that but I'm glad I tried.
I know it's scary, frustrating and overwhelming all at the same time but your strong! You'll know what to do when the time comes and just know we're here to listen and help if we can. GL to u!
  • Thank you. I will do that. The thing scaring me is that can this test actually now make that go into my uterus ? Or cause some problem for me. I mean not being pregnant. Idk why he said no antibiotics. Everything I read says u need antibiotics. I was going to a diff re before him and she gave doxcycline to me for the day before test and two days after. But I ended up not having it done w her. This new re did not prescribe any. But I'm so paranoid I feel like taking the one the other RE gave
