Acupuncture to induce labor

I think I've seen one or two people mention trying this but I never saw any follow up on whether it worked! Most of what I've read says that while it can't hurt there's not enough data to say whether it's effective- most evidence seems anecdotal and actual studies are small and mixed in results. Curious if anyone has done/will be doing this if you are late or even starting at 39 weeks. I'm heavily considering it once I hit 39 weeks because I am OVER this pregnancy!

Re: Acupuncture to induce labor

  • No personal experience with this but my sister used acupuncture to help her infertility and swears it helped. I've read into acupressure to help induce labor and would assume they would target the same spots through acupuncture. If you feel like spending the money, give it a whirl! I probably will try if I got past 40 weeks. 38+6 today.....

  • I did it with DS1, I think I started around 40 weeks. I went multiple times at least 3 or so times. It didn't work. I still had to be induced the evening of 41+4.

  • I just started it a few days ago. I figured it's not going to hurt anything, so why not.  I'm not entirely sure that I buy into it, but while I'm lying there (I've been twice so far), baby is moving like crazy for the entire hour.  She moves like she's never moved before.  So maybe it's doing something? The acupuncturist recommended that for inducing labor (I'm currently 39+5), I should come as often as possible, and that seems to align with what I've read online. I don't think it'll do much if you only go once or twice, but who know if it'll even do much if I go almost everyday. But worth a shot!
  • My birth class teacher says you should go often starting at 37 weeks and waiting till 40 is too long. Personally based on the evidence it's not for me, but I would go for it if it's your thing.

  • Trying it for the first time tomorrow at 41+1...I seem to have found more experiences of it working for over due people on the first or second time than it not working at all...my insurance covers it as far as I can tell so I figured I might as well try! I'm getting a second sweep done right after so if labor does start I probably won't be able to say which did the trick.
  • I used castor oil and I went into labor early morning. Around 4am. I took two tbl in pineapple juice. Had the baby the next night. She was born at 7pm . Only if your over 38 weeks.
  • I had a second treatment today, the first didn't do anything, hoping today at 41+4 I'll have more luck.
  • I used it heavily when I was going through infertility and I believe it contributed to this pregnancy. But like pp mentioned it really needs a decent stretch of time to become effective in my opinion. If you're looking for something immediate I'd prob go with massage.
  • I'm going in tomorrow so well see if it works. On the website for the place I'm going there seemed to be a difference between pregnancy acupuncture that they suggest you start weekly at 37 weeks and acupuncture to induce labor. The induction acupuncture says most people only need one session and labor starts within a couple of hours up to 72 hours. Some people need a second session. Im hoping I'll only need one.

This is terrible unsafe advice to advocate for castor oil.
