1st Trimester

Implantation bleeding, period or early mc?

We just recently started ttc, had a ppt last Wednesday and I started feeling mild cramps Friday. Saturday night I had light pink - dark blood off and on. Sunday morning I felt more cramping and had enough blood when wiping to need several tissues. (It was thick and dark brown or maroon). My last wipe there was a piece on tissue, without any blood. It was about an inch long and dark brown/red. Much like a clot. My husband and I assumed that I was having an early mc.
But I started reading and found that this might be ib. Is this possible?!?

More info: I'm 36, paraguard removed 11/10, 7w mark would be Feb 1st, no previous pregnancies.
Sorry that I haven't caught up on all the abbreviations everyone uses.

Re: Implantation bleeding, period or early mc?

  • Unfortunately none of us can tell you what caused the bleeding, if you think you may be pregnant I'd suggest taking a test to start with.

Good luck TTC! Wishing you success and a H&H pregnancy.

  • Um...if you think you might be in any way pregnant, why would you not take a test?

As the other two PPs  have said, don't make assumptions about what could be happening until you take a test. We can't tell you if you're pregnant, and we can't tell you why you're bleeding.

  • Did you mean positive pregnancy test by "ppt"? I haven't seen that before.
Either way no one can tell you what caused your bleeding. IB is typically small in volume though as far as I know. Your best bet is to call your doctor, they should be able to clarify further. Good luck.

  • Yes. I took a test last Wednesday and it was positive.
I called 2 Dr's, recommended by my GP, and they could not schedule me for a pregnancy confirmation appointment until I am at least 7 weeks.
Which is why I feel like I'm in limbo and asking for some info on this forum.

I don't have any pain or foul discharge. So I personally don't feel like this is an infection.

At least these are the symptoms so far.
Thanks for the comments in advance.

  • Well, if you're pregnant, it's impossible to have a period. So that rules that out.
Implantation bleeding happens around your gestational age (so, you're 4 weeks?), and as my OB put it, is a very bloody process.

I mean, if you're about 4weeks, it's likely that even if you did go see a doctor now, or went to the ER, that they really won't be able to see anything or give you a difinitive answer. Sorry, but you're just going to have to wait this one out. I know it can be agonizing. I'm sorry. Thoughts and prayers for you.

  • Have you tried calling the doctors back since the bleeding started and see if they can get you in earlier?  It seems like a couple blood draws a few days apart might give you some info--not definitive, but you could figure out whether your HCG levels are doing what they are supposed or not (or they could be borderline).  I was under the care of a reproductive endocrinologist in early pregnancy, so I'm not sure what the protocol is with OBs doing this routinely.

  • If you already got a pos test, it can't really be implantation bleeding. If there was a decent amount of blood, it may have been a chemical pregnancy. However, bleeding can still happen. Wait it out.

I hope you get good news!

I'm waiting for the offices to open since this happened over the weekend.
I'm new to my area and don't have an obgyn I'm established with. (Otherwise I don't think it would be such a big deal to get an appointment).

I think I'll have to wait this out for a bit.
We were just so hopeful and excited that we got pregnant in our 1st month of trying.
  • Don't assume mc. I was 6 weeks and starting bleeding like crazy and i have a clot behind the sac that was causing me to bleed. A lot of women bleed in the first trimester. Think positive
  • Oh thank you, DeannaMike.
We assumed Mc but I started reading that heavy ib is possible. So I got a bit hopeful that maybe that's all it is. The tissue was the concern.
I'm still waiting for a return call from the Dr office. Fingers crossed.
  • Have you taken another test to see if it's still positive?

  • I spoke worth the obgyn.
She said that what I've explained is normal.
The clotting I described could be old uterine lining or blood that congealed overnight.
I haven't spotted since I woke up this morning.

She did schedule me for a pregnancy confirmation Feb. 10th.
Until then she said to relax. And to call if I have extreme pain or excessive bleeding.

    I'll take another test tonight.

    ...keeping fingers crossed.
  • I would wait a few days on taking another test, tbh.

When I was pregnant with DS, I had some pretty significant bleeding about a week before I found out that I was pregnant, and a few times after that. He's 2 now.

    Fingers crossed for you.

  • Oh that's good news! Listen to her and relax take it easy don't over due it. Trust me I went through the bleeding I'm actually still spotting but 9w2d heard the heart beat twice already. Let us know what happens!
  • I had bleeding pretty much the same as you are describing, about a week after my positive test (approx week 6) it lasted 9 days and i am now nearly 31 weeks pregnant. good luck to you, relaxing is all you can do!

I would wait before taking another test. If it is a chemical pregnancy the hormone will still be in your body for at least a few days and will turn a test postive still. Sounds like your doctor gave you good news, but if you're taking a test to see if it is still postive, it may not be as reliable so soon after the bleeding. Good luck and thoughts coming your way!
  • I've taken y'alls advice and I'm going to wait on taking another test.
My period was scheduled to start Monday and that still hasn't happened.
I have had a thick, dark brown, bloody discharge each morning. But nothing else.
So I'm trying to just go with the flow and keep myself calm!

    Thanks for the advice!
  • Brown blood is good it's old.
