exclusively pumping discussion?

I've searched several times and can't find the EP discussion. Can someone help me out in finding it again? If not, my question is, has anyone went back to nursing after EP for so long? When my daughter was born she had a tongue tie which made nursing dreadful. I cried several times a day and she screamed like she didn't get anything while nursing. Then I'd have to give her a bottle anyway after trying to nurse for over and hour. We opted to EP but she's since gotten bigger, she weighs 8 pounds 9 ounces now. She also has had her tongue tie fixed. Just wondering if we could give nursing another shot. I was really frustrated before and do not want to go back to crying everyday but I'd LOVE to nurse. Pumping is beyond exhausting. I can barely leave the house. Wondering if it's too late to try and nurse since she's had a bottle for 7 weeks now. Really, really want her to have breast milk but I can't see doing this for several more months.

I don't see why it would hurt to try nursing. It may take some work but it sounds like it would be worth it for you. Have you considered reaching out to a LC for help getting things jumpstarted?

  • I EP'd for almost 3 weeks. He breastfed for a week, then bottle for 3. It was difficult getting him latched back on but he's breast only now. The thing that helped me most was to hand express before putting him on to get the milk flowing. A couple days and he got the hang of it!
  • I EP'd for just about 6 weeks (LO just refused to latch and pushed my boobs away) then ine day I decided to give the boob a try again...and BAM he latched on and we have been BFing for just about 3.5 weeks now. His latch is a little lazy but his sucking is awesome and he does well at feeding. When we tried BFing again he was 8lbs 14oz so I think that helped. I think what helped me the most was that I knew that if he wouldn't latch then at least he would take a bottle and eat, this helped me immensely since I wasn't worried about him not getting enough to eat. And now because I had been EPing I have quite the freezer stash just in case!
  • I don't see why it would be too late. The only time I'd think it would really, truly be too late is if you were no longer lactating ;)

Might as well give it a shot. I EBF. When we first got started the LC said he couldn't get a good latch because of my nipples being small, so I've always used a shield. It was still excruciating, though, and I suffered through it for about a week before I realized the shield was the wrong size; the right size made it painless. So that's something to keep in mind, too, if you still have pain or latch issues.
  • I'd like to be able to nurse my daughter again as well.  I'm pumping now and still not making enough for her.  I'm at about 1/2 and 1/2 milk and formula.  I'd like to feel the connection and bonding that comes with nursing again instead of feeling like a cow hooked up to a milk machine.
If there's something strange underneath the hood.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  If there's something weird and it don't look good.  Who you gonna call?  Your Doctor.  Immediately.  If it's new, painful, and possibly pregnancy related get your ass off the internet and call your doctor.  It's for your health and your child's.

  • I only pump Every 6 hours (12, 6, 12, 6) but she eats every 3. I hope that's not a problem when I try to start nursing again. I still make enough for her to only have breast milk at this point with pumping. She eats about 3 to 3.5 ounces per feeding. I'm just nervous she'll be used to the bottle, and how fast she gets the milk now and not want to work for it. I guess all we can do is try !

I breast feed, but after 4 days with only a bottle due to my own Hospitalization he no longer want to BF, so i EP. After a few weeks I started to try feeding again. I gave him some of his bottle to start so he didn't think he was starving, and then offered the breast when it was pretty full. I did that for awhile and now he will BF without issue
  • My cousins EP and went back to nursing at 3 months. She did a ton of skin to skin like PP said. She said that what helped the most was being relaxed, and not forcing it. I second trying to get in touch with a LC. You may even be able to find one for free (I did at our local WIC office)
