1st Trimester

Period while pregnant? (Loss mention)

Just curious if anyone else has experienced having a "period" while pregnant and what the outcome was. Husband and I had been TTC since November. Unsuccessful in November and thought we were unsuccessful in December as well. I started what I thought was my period on December 27th, it lasted until December 31st, so the normal flow and length of time and that I would have a period. I honestly did not think I was pregnant. On Jan. 3rd weekend I started spotting, which was very odd for me because I never have irregular periods. I spotted on and off very lightly for two days. I had a dull back ache for several days. Since my ovulation date was Jan 10th/11th, I decided to start doing the ovulation test kits on Jan 5th to make sure I did not miss it. Immediately the test was positive, which I thought was very odd since I shouldn't have been ovulating. I decided to take a pregnancy test (something inside me told me to do it), and it was positive also. I took another pregnancy test on Jan 6th it was also positive. Went to the doctor that afternoon and had a blood test. First blood test was 450, I was asked to come back in on Thursday and retake, the number went up to 650 which is within the range they wanted to see. I have to go back Monday and take 1 more test to verify I am advancing as they would expect and then they will schedule an ultrasound. Doesn't appear I am having miscarriage since the hcg numbers are going up. Doctors indicated that I may have an ectopic pregnancy since I had the early bleeding (but they could not tell until the ultrasound) and if I started having pain to let them know and go to the hospital - I have had no pain aside from dull back ache pain.

Husband and I are very cautious to be excited about this pregnancy because we are terrified something is wrong. Our last pregnancy ended at 18 weeks due to complications with our baby. Just wondering if anyone has been through a "period" while pregnant and had a healthy baby and pregnancy? Thank you all.

  • Thanks for your reply! I have been in touch with the doctors, just wondered if anyone had any similar situations and resulted in healthy children. I'm glad to hear that you have a healthy 19 month old - that makes me feel hopeful! I put period in quotes because I know you can't get the it, but it sure did seem like I had one lol.
  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I'm glad your doctors are monitoring you and checking your levels. During my first trimester, I had two bleeding episodes that lasted for several days each. Mine started with more of a gush of blood vs a period-like bleed. I had ultrasounds done and they discovered subchorionic hematomas, which seem to be fairly common. Luckily for us, they didn't affect the placentas and we now have healthy 5 1/2 week old twins.

Good luck, I hope it isn't anything too serious.
  • I don't have anything to add, just wanted to wish you the best!

  • I'm sorry for your loss, and understand your hesitancy because of it. I didn't have any bleeding reminiscent of a period in flow/length, but I did have two separate episodes of bleeding this pregnancy. They suspect that it was due to a SCH, which is pretty common. Like PPs said, there are numerous reasons that you could be bleeding, not only an ectopic pregnancy. Dull pain is actually a pretty common symptom for pregnancy, if you begin experiencing sharp stabbing pains, that's more a sign of ectopic. Best of luck, I hope the ultrasound is able to show you a healthy viable pregnancy.

  • Hi there, and sorry for you loss. I had 9 days of bleeding/spotting with this pregnancy which the doc put down as delayed implant bleeding (the blood pooled at the top of my cervix for a while so it showed itself at 6 weeks) and also an irritated cervix. Im nearly 31 weeks now and baby is healthy. Another pp mentioned ectopic pain being quite sharp, i was told this by my doc too. I had achy cramping all through first tri which can be quite normal. Wishing you all the best with this little bean!
  • Happy to hear everything is well with you! Congrats on your pregnancy !

  • Congrats! Hope you have a happy healthy pregnancy!
  • I just wanna throw in there that I have very irregular periods and thought I was getting a period. After a few days of it being even weirder than normal, I got a bfp. If I wouldn't have tested, I wouldn't have found out for a while. So I was in a similar situation. So happy to hear everything is going good so far! T&p for a sticky baby!
