Help! Baby won't take a bottle!

16 week old has taken a bottle a few times. I have had issues with pumping (and time with a crap napper) we hadn't tried in a while, but she has been flat out refusing no matter who gives it to her. She screams hysterically! I am supposed to go back to work on February 1st... I don't know what to do!

Re: Help! Baby won't take a bottle!

  • As they go through growth spurts and wonder weeks I find that mine throws a bigger fit than normal although she is not a fan of a bottle really. The only one she will eat out of is the nuk advanced. It is shaped completely different and the hole is on the top instead of at the end of the nipple. This makes it so it does not freely drip which mine hates the bottles that do. With my girl you have to make sure you have the nipple in far enough where the base is fully pressed against her lips. This with a combination of boucing and swaying (her secret to happiness no matter what) finally got her to eat from a bottle. Now you do not have to go through such elaborate maneuvers but it was a trial in the beginning.

  • Make sure it's warm enough and the bottle is tipped towards the roof of her mouth so her suck reflex is stimulated. Try when she's calm but I wouldn't force it. She may not take a bottle if she knows your home because she prefers you. Have someone try while you run an errand or do something nice for yourself.
  • This happened to my friend. It took 3 days of her husband and mom trying to finally get the baby to take a bottle and now she is doing great with it! They actually used a medicine dropper and a spoon to transition her. It was a lot of work and persistence but eventually she did do it!
  • The daughter is 16 weeks as well, and will not take a bottle either. Nor a Binky. I've tried EVERYTHING. At this point, I've just given up.

Mine likes her mam binky, just ordered a mam bottle to try next
  • That is what I would do. The only paci mine will take is the nuk so that is a good sign that she will take it. May take a little adjustment still but it not feeling weird in their mouth is the big first step.
  • Ordered a Nuk advanced too....should be here tomorrow (love Amazon prime!) And of course we are in the 4th leap. Hopefully that has a little something to do with her refusal and she will start taking one soon and consistently!
