So my Dr just called me from the office Friday and told me I had extremely abnormal results on my pap smear! I have to go in for a colors copy tomorrow and am super worried about what might be wrong. I am 13 weeks pregnant and extremely worried! Has anyone else had to go through this? What were the outcomes? A little history on me: I am STD free but did have HPV a few years ago that only lasted about 2 to 3 months then the Dr said all signs were gone..... So I don't know if it has something to do with that or not? Just looking for advice!
Re: Coloscopy!?!
In my experience, they are scary at first but really nothing to worry about. They will take a swab of the abnormal cells and monitor their growth. I had to go every 4-6 months. Mine got worse and worse, then all of a sudden got better so I don't have to worry about taking further steps. So try not to stress about it. A lot of woman have to have them. Just ask questions until you're comfortable!
Edit: I forgot to mention that I also have HPV. From my understanding, once you have HPV you have it for life. Although you can be symptom free.
Really the only thing that would cause an abnormal pap is some grade of abnormal (pre-cancerous or cancerous) cells on your cervix. Which is directly caused by HPV. Seeing as how you are only 20 and your previous dysplasia was not severe, I highly doubt it is cancerous. You probably have low grade abnormal cells, which are pre-cancerous and take lots of time to progress and usually go away on their own if you are young and have a good immune system.
I am 22 and have HPV as well. Mine is high grade and aggressive. It was CIN3 and I had quite a bit of my cervix removed via laser ablation surgery in 2014. After the surgery I was clean and clear for a couple of months and then the paps started testing abnormal again. In May 2015, after a colposcopy and biopsy, I was diagnosed with CIN3 again. When I went in to discuss what route we were going to take to remove the abnormal cells, I ended up with a positive pregnancy test! The doctors then told me any procedure to remove abnormal cells would have to wait till after I delivered because messing with the cervix while pregnant isn't a good idea and can cause miscarriage. They actually said that vaginal delivery can help slough off the abnormal cells. Anyhow, they've done 3 colposcopys on me during this pregnancy just to monitor the abnormalities and make sure they are not progressing to cancer. I would not allow them to take biopsies because that is too irritating to the cervix during pregnancy. But if your doctor knows what their doing, they should be able to tell just by the colposcopy (where they spray vinegar on your cervix to light up abnormalities and view it under a microscope thing) if you're abnormal cells are under control.
Don't stress yourself too much.. You and your baby will likely be fine. You'll just be monitored through pregnancy and take action if needed after you deliver. But as women with HPV, we really should educate ourselves on this virus we're living with, as it can be serious.
Best of luck to you and your family
