2nd Trimester

Progesterone

hi everyone!

I have been on Progestesterone suppositories for a while now, and my dr told me not to take it yesterday and today and to get blood on Monday to see how my levels are. I'm 8 weeks. I'm slightly freaking out because I'm having slight cramping today. Is this a normal side effect of going off Progesterone or is this a miscarriage (already had 3)?

Thank you!

Re: Progesterone

  • I would imagine cramping in pregnancy is normal since your uterus is growing and stretching. I had a lot early on but it has subsided now that I'm 23 weeks, surprisingly round ligament pain hasn't been that bad for me in 2nd tri. If it's not accompanied by heavy bleeding. I wouldn't worry. Especially since your pregnancy is being closely monitored by your doctor.

  • I was on progesterone after ovulation till almost 13 wks. My doc only checked my levels early on but while i was still taking them. Cramping can be normal but I would check with your doc. I had some bleeding here and there with cramping and was scared due to recent MC. I was put on moderate bed rest. Things have been better since 16 wks. I am now 25 wks.
  • My doc said to stop at 10 weeks, but I stretched it till 11.5 weeks, because I was nervous. I have heard of people stopping as early as 8 weeks, but it is my understanding (as a nondoctor!) that the placenta is supposed to be making its own P by 10 weeks. There is no harm staying on it longer into first tri, although they say if it is a healthy pregnancy, nothing past 10 will help if it's not. Nobody checked my levels afterwards. I am now 19 weeks and had no issues with stopping.

Listen to you doc, obviously...I wouldn't assume MC though. There is cramping at any given time during a preg.

Those annoying cramps are pretty normal in pregnancy. I've had a pregnancy without progesterone and one with, and the cramping was the same "for me" both times. You don't mention any bleeding, so that sounds promising. Congrats on your pregnancy!
