Heartburn of death

Is anyone else having incredible heartburn of death? I eat, I get heartburn. I don't eat, I get heartburn. I breathe, I get heartburn. Tums don't seem to be working at all. I'm 19 weeks. Anyone else having issues or remedies?

Re: Heartburn of death

  • I'm not (yet) but dairy products may help? I'm basing this solely on dairy neutralizing acids in spicy foods so I may be totally off here but hey, its worth a try, right?

  • So far this is the only symptom I don't have, but I have friends who swear by milk of magnesium. You probably already do this, but make sure not to lay down immediately after eating.
  • I have been! It's awful, but drinking milk and sitting up helps so that's good :) except when its the middle of the night!
  • Are you eating Tums? I keep them with me at all times.

  • I'm not yet, but every time I see this listed as a symptom I cringe Bc I know it'll hit soon

  • The mint Tums work wonders. I ate them like candy with my DD.
  • That stinks. I've had it but tums work. Maybe try different flavors?
  • Strangely enough, I suffered with horrible acid reflux before my pregnancy. I had to go see a specialist. Turns out I have Eosinophilic Esophagitis (meaning my esophagus swells closed like an allergic reaction when I eat trigger foods) and it feels like acid reflux x1000. I got these 2 new meds for it. One is safe during pregnancy and the other not. But ever since I've been pregnant, I haven't had any signs of it and I haven't needed to take any medication *knocks on wood* My SO jokes that it's because I'm pregnant with his child. I hope this trend continues! I feel for you ladies that do have it though. I used to live off of tums daily. We even had a code "2319!" And my SO knew to bring me tums, crackers, and ginger ale. <3 What a trooper
  • Have you tried papaya enzymes? Got some at Walmart's vitamin section, instant relief
  • Tums! All the time! Plus the calcium is a bonus
  • Tums.
I too had HORRIBLE heartburn with my 1st pregnancy, and gave birth to a baby with a head full of thick hair- at least an inch long. Maybe you too will have a Rapunzel baby

  • I don't really have advice, but I feel your pain. I have acid reflux (which I think I understand is part of heartburn?) pretty much all the time. It's super uncomfortable, especially when I lay down. I'm 16.5 weeks now and it's finally begun calming down. Not sure why, but I have made an effort to stay upright after eating for a few hours (which meant eating dinner much earlier than usual). My doctor told me Tums and Pepcid are totally safe options. I hope you get some relief!

The mixed berry ones are the best. It says not more than 5 in 24 hour period on the bottle I have.

Pepcid AC is safe for pregnancy
  • Last pregnancy my heart burn was so awful that my dr gave me zantic. So far no heart burn yet, I know it's coming though.

  • Lurking from May 16- My doctor told me to use Pepcid AC, it's totally made my heartburn much more manageable
  • My heartburn is horrible. I even get it when I drink milk!!!! It's crazy!! I had heart burn from certain foods before and one of my meds causes heartburn as a side effect but i'm dieing. 2 hours of sleep a night because of heart burn can not be good for the baby or me :( maybe I will talk to my doctor about a prescription so I can get some sleep. Tums helps for a few hours then it comes back worse. Sitting up rarely helps as well..

  • Sometimes when I bend over, it even feels like I threw up a little in my mouth. Tums frequently, trying to stay propped up. But talk to your MD if no relief from tums.

This! I have this sometimes even sitting up... Ugh

  • I hate it so much.  Last pregnancy, my husband and I were trying to max out on date time in our last few months as a childless couple, and I kept getting it just as we set off on dinner dates- never failed.  I get it a lot when I'm not pregnant too tbh and I have yet to find anything that works.  I remember zantac just making me feel more uncomfortable.  I wish I could offer advice.  Hang in there!

  • So I've been taking the maximum amount of tums but lo and behold, zantac worked better and it's pregnancy safe!
