1st Trimester

4 Weeks and Overweight

Hello! My husband and I just found out were BFP yesterday. I have always been overweight but the past five months have been very stressful and I gained a significant amount of weight. On top of that, I gained even more weight the past month between infertility medication and the holidays. My doctor had wanted me to lose 30 pounds or more before I got pregnant, instead, I probably gained thirty. My doctor said I'll need to lose about 35 pounds during my pregnancy. I actually signed up for Weight Watchers last week, but I was so hungry all week I didn't do very well. Well, now I think I was eating because I was pregnant. I ordered groceries today and got tons of fresh fruits and veggies so I have them around me and will reach them instead of the 500 Kit Kats I ate last week. I know there are a lot of health risks (although I've always had low blood pressure and cholesterol), but I also don't want to be lethargic and uncomfortable during and after my pregnancy. Has anyone else dealt with this? Were you successful in losing weight?

Re: 4 Weeks and Overweight

  • I've never heard of a doctor recommending weight loss during pregnancy... It's possible to gain no or very little weight, but I don't see how it's possible to lose that much weight, especially towards the end....

My doctor told me that it is completely fine to lose fat weight as long as you put on your baby weight. If your doctor wants you to lose weight, you could look at Quick Weight Loss Center. You eat a TON of food. A ton. It also works. It isn't cheap by any means and you'd definitely need to talk to your doctor first, but it's a good option.
  • Ugh thy sucks! I was doing some research right when I found out I was pregnant, and any research articles saying it is ok for pregnant women to lose weight really only focused on the lower numbers, like 10 pounds. I could not imagine this hunger and having to lose weight. I am super overweight, and my doctor really hasn't said anything, thank god. I am trying to only gain 10-15 pounds as is recommended for my size.

At four weeks, it may be relatively easy to lose a bit of weight through diet, though depending on your level of morning sickness/exhaustion, it may be near impossible to get any type of workout in.

    Good luck!
  • I'm right with ya honey! I'm extremely overweight and technically considered morbidly obese...I was half terrified when we got pregnant because I'd been working really hard to LOSE weight, thinking the reason we weren't getting pregnant because I was just too big.

Like you, I ate like a freakin' horse those first early weeks thinking I was ravenous for no reason other than poor will-power and it turned out I was knocked up!! Our midwife told us "You could gain 10lbs, lose 10lbs, or not do either and it will all be fine. You can lose more, too...but I want it to be because you're eating good, healthy foods...not because you're specifically dieting or trying to lose weight." She told us it's actually pretty common for big girls to lose during pregnancy for that very reason - we start eating a lot more healthy for the baby.

Between my first and second appointments, I gained about 5lbs and wanted to melt into the floor...Then at my 3rd appointment, found out I lost 4lbs! So at 12 wks, I'm right about exactly where I was at 6wks! Not really doing anything different or special, just trying to be conscious of what I'm putting in my mouth.

    You'll do just fine!!!
  • I have no advice, I just want to wish you a happy and healthy pregnancy! I hope you can find something that keeps you comfortable as well as keeps you and baby safe!
  • I would ask to be refered to a registered dietician. Changing unhealthy foods for healthy fruits, veggies and lean proteins is a fantastic start. Also try to limit the amount of refined carbohydrates. Focus on whole foods. If weight loss is achieved through changing to healthier foods, then baby is still getting what he/she needs. Don't do anything drastic. No crash diets with low calorie restrictions (below 1200).

If you are cleared for exercise walking is fantastic and can help you from feeling lethargic.

I wish you the best of luck with your pregnancy.

  • I think your doctor telling you to lose 35 lbs while you're pregnant is asinine.  There is nothing wrong with eating healthy and exercising while you're pregnant, but you shouldn't be pressured into 'dieting'.
It is very possible to gain very little weight while pregnant, and sometimes even lose, but it shouldn't be because you're trying.
I'm no doctor, but I highly recommend just trying to eat a clean and healthy diet and incorporating exercise into your daily routine.  But don't stress yourself over losing weight.  You are growing a little human, after all!

  • The only time I have heard if a Dr telling a pregnant women to lose weight was when the women was 400 pounds.

Unless your diet was Mcdonald and Snickers bars and now you just had your first salad in your adult life, then your Dr is actually going against ACOG recommendations.
I am a big girl, aka morbidly obese, I was not told to lose any weight but to be mindful of what I am gaining.

I am concerned if your provider is giving poor advice now, what else will he/she suggest or deny later.
    Thank God for Raid.

This. All of this. I'm a big girl too, and all my doctor said was be mindful so that I'm not gaining like, 60 lbs.
  • No thoughts/ideas on the rest of your post, but I am almost positive you aren't allowed to follow Weight Watchers if you are pregnant- are you going to meetings?

Yes you are. They give a different point system or add more points.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I had just signed up for weight watchers and when i informed them that I was pregnant I was refunded my money and told that I am not allowed to attend the meetings. I can continue the program on my own but they cannot be responsible for my weight loss. My friend is a registered dietician and she suggested to stick to about 1800 calories during the first trimester and to make sure to eat clean whole foods. I am also a big girl and struggling with eating the right things because my body has developed an aversion to all things that grow out of the earth. Good luck!
  • Thanks for all the support and help! I think I misquoted my doctor. When I talked to the nurse the other day, she said that I should actually be trying to not gain any weight, 10 pounds at most. I am being referred to a registered dietician and have been already trying to watch what I eat. I am doing Weight Watchers online to just keep myself in check. I like fruits and vegetables and have found tracking the food I eat is a good way to make sure that I'm choosing healthy choices and not going for processed food. Now I'm worried that I won't show until late and miss out on all those "beautiful pregnant lady" moments.
