EBF and pumping for freezer stash question

Hello Mommas,

FTM here. I'm wondering what all you breast feeding Mommas are pumping for your emergency freezer stash each day if you have one? How often and how do you do it? Do you pump after each feeding and collect until you have enough for a bag, or do you have an extra or several extra pump only sessions? How many ounces a day are you able to put away while also breast feeding your baby full time?

I'm only able to get 3-4 oz extra a day for the freezer stash... Does that seem low?

Re: EBF and pumping for freezer stash question

  • I just pump one side in the morning after she feeds from the other side. I usually get 5 oz.
  • Loading the player...
  • I only pump once a day.. usually between 8-10am after his 2nd morning feeding. After sleeping most of the night, I want to unload so that Im not engorged. I pump both at the same time and combine it to usually get 4-6oz total. I think that I have about 20 bags in the freezer for days when he will be babysat or if maybe I would get sick or something.
  • @19katee2 I never thought of that.... If I were to get sick, is it best to not breastfeed?
  • If you get sick you definitely want to continue to nurse if possible. Pass along your immunities to the baby through your milk!
  • I usually pump before bed each night and that's it. Some days I'll pump when he takes his long 3 hour nap. I can usually get between 6-12 ounces total after I'm done. I've been pumping since he was 3 days old and have a nice stash going of about 175 ounces. With my first I was lucky to have 10 ounces and would have to pump a couple times to get a bottle made if I had to work that night so my husband could feed him.

  • 3-4 ounces sounds totally normal. Breast milk is supply and demand. I before I went back to work, I would pump the fuller side after she ate in the morning and get anywhere from 1-3 ounces, depending on how much she took. If you pump more often, your body will make more milk. You can save up for a few days and then freeze it, or just freeze what you make as you make it.

    Good luck!

  • I never even thought of combining my pumped milk throughout the day and then freezing it. That's good to know! I normally pump before bed if I can remember and then sometimes in the morning if I feel full still. It all depends on my water intake. I'm a stay at home mom so I don't pump as often as I should.

Yes you can combine but make sure the temperature is the same... If you have milk already in the fridge... And just pumped fresh warm milk, you can't add it to the cold milk until it's the same temperature... I just store my partials thru out the day (.5oz-1.5oz) and combine into baggies at night
  • I BF while I'm home and then while I'm at work I'll pump once and get around 6 Oz (3oz in each bag) to bring home and freeze. When I'm at work and not able to feed her is the only time I'm able to pump enough to freeze for her.
