Infertility

Should I be having additional testing? *losses mentioned*

I'm currently going through my 5th miscarriage in just over a year. I have had extensive blood work and a sono-hystogram(sp?) and everything came back normal.

Should I be having additional testing to figure out what's going on?

They test my progesterone each time I become pregnant and it's always fine.

Re: Should I be having additional testing? *losses mentioned*

  • I think you should seek additional testing. Have you had a work up for blood clotting disorders? An undiagnosed clotting issue could cause repeat miscarriages. I'm sure other ladies might have some suggestions.

  • @cmm012 - absolutely agree with the above. I had a friend who dealt with repeated miscarriages and they put her on blood thinning shots (I believe, I'd have to ask specifics).
After multiple MCs I'd certainly feel like I was beating my head against the wall and want more answers. Also an option to talk to a different RE, get a second opinion. I know my new one believes in immune related factors and my previous did NOT. Have you had a uterine biopsy done at all to look at receptivity issues?
Wishing you all the best on this rollercoaster!

  • Have they done any genetic/kereotype testing on you and your husband? Our clinic mentioned that sometimes this can cause infertility and miscarriages when you and your SO genes are combined.
  • Thanks so much everyone. We are still waiting on the karotype testing results. I will ask about clotting disorders

  • Yes, I would definitely ask if you've been checked for clotting disorders, but I think those are usually part of a repeated loss panel. I can't imagine how difficult this must be for you. Would IVF with PGD be a possible option? That would (I think) eliminate any chromosomal issues which might be causing the m/cs. (someone correct me if I am wrong).

We requested additional testing on me following a m/c after ivf and our RE reluctantly agreed. Turned out I have a blood disorder, mthfr mutation to be exact. We were told the medical community is split about whether or not it can cause or be a leading factor in miscarriages and infertility.

My RE said she had no concrete opinion so she put me on folic acid and baby aspirin just in case. My next pregnancy (through frozen transfer) was successful and now I'm blessed with newborn twins. This was the only thing that really changed ve

It was such an easy, over the counter fix. I looked it up after the results came back and had a few of the other problem the mutation can cause and since I started taking those pills, the other issues have mostly dissipated. Whenever I hear of a woman who has suffered several losses and is struggling, I always suggest they get the blood test for this.

    Good luck on your journey.
  • Does your physician have you on progesterone suppositories? I know a women who has recurrent miscarriages and was eventually placed on progesterone for the first 10 weeks of her most recent pregnancy. She is about to deliver! My RE has me go on progesterone suppositories starting the day after my IUIs to continue through 10 weeks of pregnancy occurs.
  • @laurenlalapHello! I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. I've had three losses in about 16 months. They surely don't get any easier. Have you had an RPL panel? If not, I'd request one. Also, did your husband have a semen analysis done? If not, definitely ask for one even though many will say his sperm isn't a factor since you have gotten pregnant.

I wanted to invite you to my blog about IVF and repeat pregnancy loss. Feel free to check it out, drop a comment where you might have some expertise, or follow via email if you'd like. Check out my blog post (My Road to IVF) regarding my husband's morphology and how that might be factoring into our losses.

@laurenlalap I am so sorry for your reoccurring miscarriages. I just wanted to let you know I was in the same situation of habitual miscarriages. After all of my D&Cs the fetus showed no sign of chromosomal abnormalities so I knew something was wrong with me and it wasn't just a fluke..Fortunately my RE found the problem after the third loss and found through testing for blood clotting disorders through my blood panel I do have a rare blood clotting disorder called Antiphosolipid syndrome. Make sure they tested your for this disorder along with other blood clotting disorders. I have been on baby aspirin since trying to conceive - and currently am 12 weeks 5 days pregnant and do blood thinner injections one time a day as well as took progesterone until week 10 of pregnancy and a few other medications. So far everything seems to be progressing as it should be. I will be praying for you for a healthy pregnancy.
