First day of daycare tips

DD will start daycare tomorrow. I'm still on maternity leave and wanted to start while I'm still home so we/I can get used to it. Any tips for the first day? I'm going to pack her bag with wipes & diapers (how many do you bring - a sleeve?), bottles, pacifier, change of clothes (how many?). Anything else? Should I bring a blanket even though it's not for crib use? The daycare has a sheet that they complete daily about feedings and diaper changes and what LO did for the day etc which I like. Not sure if I want to have them tell me what milestone she hits - she hasn't rolled yet so debating if I want to know or let them let me see it for first time. Is that silly?? Also someone mentioned to change LO shirt when she comes home to minimize germs. I thought that was a good suggestion.

Re: First day of daycare tips

  • I brought one sleeve of diapers because they do not have room to store a box. I brought three bibs (they use these instead of burb cloths), three onsies, two pairs of pants, two pairs of extra socks, two pacifiers, blanket, crib sheet (the center has their own but recommend bringing our own - we take them home to wash every Friday), and bottles (about 6 - each bottle had one serving, otherwise they will throw away what is left after it has been out for awhile).

We change clothing and give a bath when he gets home to get rid of germs and he smells like "daycare." (But maybe I am over sensitive to smells!!)

They also do the daily reports and I am not sure if they would log milestones. I don't think it is silly if you don't want to know! I am ok with knowing because I would work with him that evening to see if he will do it again.

    Good luck!

  • Our daycare has plenty of storage room. We take a box of diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream, extra clothes, blanket, and bibs. They just put the bibs in a pile and wash them each night. It's nice that we don't have to take them home to wash. We take 4- 4oz bottles. She typically only takes 3. They also do the report which I love.
  • Agree with PPs about what to bring. Just wanted to send along a note of encouragement. My son started last week and I was a wreck in the week leading up to it - crying every day. The first day went great! The rest of the week was great too. A bonus is my son was so stimulated during the day that he slept through the night all last week! Hang in there mama, daycare is a great thing for you and for your baby!
  • Thanks ladies for the tips. @KristiSigma Someone told me about changing her clothing when she gets home and I'm definitely going to do that. Do you bathe right when you get LO home or at bedtime was part of routine? Right now we don't bathe every night but I'm thinking we will start with daycare.
  • Probably about and hour or an hour and a half after we get home. LO is so pooped from daycare that he sleeps on during the car ride home and for about a half hour or 45 min after we get in. Then he is hungry, so I take care of those needs first. By then I have eaten a quick dinner and organized his things for the next day.

I pick him up around 4pm and he gets his bath around 5 or 5:30pm. We wind down for bed around 6:30 / 6:45. I would prefer bath time a little closer to bed time but it is also nice to get it done so the whole family is done with chores and can relax. (Not that bath time is not relaxing - just nice to have everyone clean and in pajams).
  • @duckygirl11 thanks for the encouragement! I've got her bag packed and everything labeled. I cried to DH earlier but feel better now. I'm excited for her to socialize with other babies and learn. I hope our first day/week goes as great as yours!! My only big concern is knowing she will get sick often in daycare
