Maternity Support band? Symphysis Pubic Dysfunction... Anyone else?

Anyone else suffering with SPD? I had it with my first pregnancy (DS just turned 4), I had a awesome easy pregnancy except for my pelvis hurt, I struggled with tasks like getting in and out of bed, lifting leg to get dressed, rolling over in bed (hubby had to help), anything really the required one leg to lift :( I ended up having a csec cause I was afraid of permanent damage. SPD is where the hormone "relaxin" which is produced to help your pevis soften to stretch is over produced. I would be walking and sometimes i would start to stumble because my pelvis would slip it was realy painful. I wore a support band (they type made for post partum,) it helped that I had almost no bump, even at 9 months! (I carried towards back)

I am 14w4d and having a identical pregnancy no problems at all til three days ago til I started to fee the signs, just in three days the issues are all coming back :( going to baby store today to get a hip stablizer band... I sleep with a pillow between knees to allign pelvis and I will start elevating my legs again at work :(

Anyone else go through this before or going through it now?

  • Somtimes a physical therapist and/or a chiropractor can help with this. I would ask your Provider for a referal.

    Good luck.
    Thank God for Raid.

I went thru this with my first pregnancy (twins). I carried them until 38 weeks but at that point I could barely walk to the bathroom. So far I only feel it when I stand too long. Praying it will not be as bad with a singleton. The only thing I know of is a support band. Maybe your OB can send you to PT?
  • Have you tried a foam roller to stretch and use? I have terrible sciatic pain in places much like SPD and it helps me at night to use it and do different stretches on it. But I also suggest if you have that much pain talk to your OB and see if they can get you into PT! Feel better!

  • I had it with my first. It's awful. I've noticed some pain in the last week or so, as well. I'm scared of how bad it will be in like 26 weeks. I need to go pick up a support band soon! I hope it's not as bad this time for both of us!
  • Thanks everyone, PT and Chiropractor can't help with SPD since its a hormone over relaxing the pelvis joint. But def getting a band today if I can find one...
  • @TiffanyRickF that sucks that they can't help! Will someone post a link to these support bands I'd love to see what they look like and maybe try one for my pain.

  • I had it with my first and can feel it starting, the belt helps a lot but once you're bigger it's hard to use. I still did anyway if I was going on a walk or doing something I new would
    Aggravate it
  • I bought this one today, i can feel the relief :) im just gonna wear it around the house and when sleeping.

  • Are these different than the Bella band? Because my Bella doesn't do anything for my pain

No the bella band is more for extending your jeans so you can wear them unbuttoned etc the band i am talking about/posted is a support band. You stretch it around you then it velcros in place tightly so it squeezes your hips instead of letting the hips spread/relax. Its not attractive i wont wear it atwork unless wearing a long baggy sweater, cause it makes your butt unflattering...pushes it up or down depending on placement, i have a bubblebutt... lmao
  • @TiffanyRickF I bought a similar band with my first pregnancy. I had some issues in my early second trimester with swelling in my feet and legs, and the band helped support my growing belly and took some of the pressure off of my legs. I agree, they're somewhat bulky so not the most flattering, but I still ended up wearing mine every day. I just bought a fleet of long cardigans to help conceal.
