Loyal to boob ... Help!

So I am off on a girls getaway overseas next month with my family (long story). Husband and bubs are staying behind which is exciting for them EXCEPT I have been EBF and bubs is refusing to take to a bottle. We have been trying to introduce for a long time and lately have tried one feed each day - he won't have a bar of it. He gets worked up and power chucks, screams and is refusing. We have tried different bottles, hubs feeding, me feeding, formula, breast milk, getting on breast then switching to bottle etc. He is in his 4th leap and is even fussy how I feed him (cannot even wear a sunhat, glasses, more skin contact and is easily distracted) any advice would be greatly helpful as I can't bare to leave him if he is refusing to eat. Thanks in advance ladies!

Re: Loyal to boob ... Help!

  • What types of bottles have you tried?
  • Loading the player...
  • Have you tried the calma nipple from medela?
  • This happens to a friend and daycare. They eventually have to use a dropped and drop a little at a time til she finally gave in and drank from a bottle.

My advice would be to find a bottle and stink with it. Pick one feeding a day, leave the room, have your husband do it. Be consistent and patient. And don't wait until he's starving- maybe try feeding him earlier than usual so he'll be more willing to work at it. But it your LO sense you are near, he'll hold out for you. My LO won't take a bottle form me or if someone else gives it to her, I can't be in the room.
  • My baby won't take a bottle of I'm at home. Once I'm out of the house, she's great.
  • On Gray's Anatomy Dr. Bailey suggested putting some sugar water on the nipple to entice baby to take the bottle. Not sure how good the advice is but worth a try?
  • My first DD never did take a bottle, but in a SAHM so I kind of gave up. All of the research I did said that baby will eat when there's no other choice. I agree you need to leave and be consistent. That worked for my friend after one week.
  • We've been trying for 2 months and no luck so we gave up! He will, however, sip from a cup so my hubby just takes the top off the bottle and he sips right from the bottle without the nipple on there. Maybe your LO would do that?

I love this! And they use something similar to encourage newborns on the breast so maybe it's worth a shot. My LO won't drink a bottle unless I'm gone and she's at daycare which is my mom.
  • Thanks ladies, we have tried the avent classics, closer to nature, a mam one and now silicone nuk brand (these were the only types available where I live so may order a Calma by medela online - I like the sound of it)

We have tried me out of the house a few times and different people trying as well as consistent times and not when he is starving (have learnt the hard way that it's not even an option yet)

He is 16 weeks and is even fussy how he is taking the breast currently and thinking this could be a bit of a phase? However, we have had a glimmer of hope yesterday where he swallowed a tiny amount and didn't scream, took a break and had another sip - then he fussed but nothing like he usually does.

Thank you for all the tips - we will continue to try new little tricks like the sugar water and take it slowly
  • Just saw your post, we are going through this now too (16 weeks)... I feel lik I'm going to have a breakdown, I'm supposed to go back to work February 1st.
  • Once you find a bottle that they show a slight acceptance of stick with it. The first time I got my girl to drink from a bottle she did the same thing. Through repetition we slowly increased the amount she would eat before getting irritated. For us it was the nuk advanced. It forms to their palate more than the regular nuk and she likes the hole on top so it doesn't spray down her throat. She showed slight interest in the mam (similar shape) but hole is on the end of nipple and sprayed down her throat shortly followed by bloody murder scream lol.
  • My daughter is refusing the bottle. I purchased the advent spout mouth sippy cups. The cups are for 6 month plus. My daughter is only 4 months but they work for her. The spout is such that she doesn't have to Suck. She bites it and the formula comes out. I put her in her bumbo and feed it to her very slowly as the milk can come out quite fast. I also try to put her in front of the TV so that she is slightly distracted.
  • Also, try a dropper or try feeding with a spoon while babs is in a sitting position. It takes longer to feed then with a bottle but offers an alternative.
  • My LO is also refusing a bottle. I'm supposed to go back to work February 1st, daycare will only take her if she takes a bottle or sippy cup.
