Baby Names

Talia

So I've been back and forth on this board for my baby girl's name so many times it's ridiculous. Last time I was given the great suggestion of Talia and Hubby and I really think it's our top contender. I just have a few more questions to ask you wonderful ladies about the name.

One-how do you think this name should be spelled? I've had a few people mention Thalia or Tahlia or even Talya as alternative spellings. Which is correct in your mind?

Two-how about pronunciation. Would you pronounce it Tall-e-uh or Tall-ya?

Any other comments about the name?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Talia

  • I pronounce it "tall-ya" and I would spell it Talia. I like this name a lot. It's very pretty!

    This. Love it.
  • Tall-ya. It's a pretty name.
  • I like it a lot. My first inclination is to spell it Thalia, just because I knew a girl that spelled it that way. But I think talia works too. Definitely not talya. I pronounce it tall-ya.
  • I think I'm the minority, but at first glance I pronounced it tall-e-ya.

Love this name! Its one of my favorites but DH isn't a huge fan.

One of my daughters name is Natalia. I always call her Talia for short. Which I pronounce tal-lee-uh. Thalia I would pronounce thow-lee-ya. Lol I'm bad at that.
  • Very nice! I pronounce it Tall-e-uh. I would spell it Talia. Definitely not Thalia unless you want people pronouncing it with the 'th' sound at the beginning
  • Talia is tal-ee-uh. Not tall like the height of a tree.
    I like it. :)
  • Definitely Tal-ee-yuh and spelled Talia. No need to complicate the spelling!

This. I think no matter how you spell it people are going to get it wrong though.
  • I would spell it Talia. I love it but always have pronounced it Tal-ee-uh, not Tall. I think I sort of say it in between 2 and 3 syllables.
  • Tall-e-uh. Pretty name.

  • Talia, pronounced Tahl-ya
  • Talia, pronounced Tahl-ya
    same for me tahl ya
  • I've only known one person with this name, and she spelled it "Talya," so that seems the most correct to me, although I feel like Talia is a fine option as well.  I pronounce those two as "Tal-yah" but would pronounce Thalia as "Ta-lee-uh."  Tahlia looks like a hot mess, IMO (no idea if it's legitimate or not).

  • I grew up with a Talia, "tall-ya" and have always loved it.
  • I know a Thalia and it's pronounced Ta-lee-uh. I would pronounce Talia like Tahl-ya
  • I've always pronounced it Tal-ee-uh.  Tal-ya sounds like someone pronouncing it with a southern accent.  Kind of like when people pronounce Julia like jool-ya instead of joo-lee-uh.

Anywhoo, I think it looks prettier and more complete as Thalia.

  • I like your spelling Talia and I'd pronounce tal-ee-yuh
  • Yess tall-ya. Talia is how i know it. It's lovely.
  • An in-law of mine spells her name Taliah and pronounces it "tall-ee-yuh". So at first I thought Talia would be pronounced that way but the longer I look at it I'm seeing how it's short for Natalia and could be pronounced that way.
  • It's an Israeli name, in it's own right, not a short form of Natalia (although you could shorten Natalia in that way if you wanted to I guess). It's beautiful!
