Nursing question... Really important help!

How many ounces are u getting after nursing? I usually get 3-4 without nursing but just now I nursed more than usual today. I nursed 3 times in a row from 9-12:30 and pumped and only an ounce came out. Would that make sense since they say the baby empties you better than pump. I'm
16 weeks pp and pumped from the start 5-6 times a day getting 16-18oz and formula twice a day.. I know wanna let the baby breastfeed instead of all the pumping. He couldn't latch on at beginning and now can.... So instead of pumping when he nurses I count that as a pump. Is that ok? I'm
Concerned tho with the 1 oz I just pumped. I have never breast fed 3 times in a row.. He ate at 9-9:10 then 10:00-10:10 and then 11:25-11:45.... Then I gave him 7 oz of my breastmilk by bottle at 12:30 do u think
He is getting enuf off the boob... I know I don't much too much but I don't think that affects what comes out of the boob.

  • If your LO can breastfeed then do that. You will make enough milk for them. Breasts don't fill and empty they are constantly producing based on demand. Maybe see a lactation consultant in your area would be helpful. They can do a weight on LO pre and post feeding to reassure you they are getting enough. Breastfeeding is soothing for them and ensures the freshest milk :) stick with it and good luck!

I tried to pump once a day before I went back to work to create an emergency stash and sometimes i would get only one ounce and sometimes three. If he was cluster feeding (eating every hour like you described) I would only get one ounce. I think it is just fine but I always worried about my production too. Now that I pump at work I get five ounces per pumping session. LO will let you know if still hungry. I have never given more than a 2.5 ounce bottle of breast milk so I am not sure why LO took 7 ounces...sorry not much help but I couldn't delete my comment once I started!!
  • The 1oz is just what was left. If baby is happy with good output, I think that's great. Is your goal EBF, or keeping the formula bottles? If you need to up your supply to replace formula, it may take a few days. Extra feedings, skin to skin time, and great nutrition/hydration will all help your supply.

  • I've never pumped after nursing but I have pumped my other breast while baby was nursing and got what I usually get.
I pump M-F at work 2-3 times a day (should be more) but once I get 12oz I stop. My baby is 14 weeks and I provide 1.5oz for every hour that I'm gone. I provide her with 3oz bottles and it takes quite a while for her to drink that since I've informed the daycare provider about pace feeding.
So saying all of that... If I were you I would allow the baby to drink from the breast as much as possible. Judge by the diaper output if he's getting enough milk. Offer baby both breast and allow him to set the pace. When it comes to bottle feeding remember that they can be overfed and that formula and breast milk consistency is different so where a formula fed baby may drink more a breast fed baby wouldn't need that much!!
  • Baby shouldn't need 7oz of breastmilk. The rule of thumb is 1-1.25 oz per every hour between a feeding. So baby only needs, at moat, 2.5oz if it's been two hours. That amount will never change, because your breastmilk is constantly evolving for what baby needs. If you are trying to latch I wouldn't give anymore pumped bottles, you could possibly stretch your baby's tummy.
  • I pump after feedings and that's usually all I get... 1oz. Sometimes only .5

Your breasts will only produce what baby needs unless you train them to do otherwise (i.e.:pumping after each feeding so your body thinks baby is still eating and knows to produce more)

I say you are right where you need to be
