I feel so helpless

My baby has been so fussy from day 1. She going to be 4 months old next week and still no change. My pediatrician has had her one 2 different prescriptions for acid refulx to see if that was the issue and no change. I've had x-ray done to see if it really was acid refulx but apparently they have to refulx at the time the x-ray is being done or u still don't know. I breastfeed and cut dairy out of my diet and no change. Now it's like she's having trouble having bowl movements so the pediatrician daid to give her pear juice. It's not helping either. She use to go every day a few times a day and now she goes maybe once every 4-5 days. Is this normal? Tomorrow is the 5th day again and it's like her belly is killing her. It's like she's trying to go and just screams crys. I feel so helpless. I'm so jealous of everyone and their happy babies. Don't get me wrong I love mine so much. Just wish I could figure out what's bother her because this is not normal. She cries ALL the time :( it makes me so upset. I don't know what else to do. I'm being referred to a specialist to see what they have to say bit they can't get me in for another week. So frustrating. I wish I could take away whatever is bothering her ;( anyone else's baby had issues like this?

Re: I feel so helpless

  • My oldest son had a bunch of gi issues. I'd recommend asking for a referral (or even self referring if insurance allows) to a pediatric gi. When they did the test for reflux did they have you pump and add barium to a bottle of expressed milk? That's the most accurate way to check for reflux.

Another thought- how is her growth? Is she staying on her own curve or has she fallen off at all? I'd maybe research or ask about possible delayed gastric emptying which can also be tested for. If she is taking longer to process and empty your milk it could explain the pooping issues, adding juice or any sort of stool softener wouldn't help if her bowels are moving too slowly. Reflux meds can also have an effect on DGE. Hope this helps!

  • My LO was extremely fussy for weeks. She was only content if she was being held and walked around. I started her on probiotics and it made such a difference. Took about a week to work but she's like a different baby now. Might be worth trying. Hope you get some relief soon!
  • My DD1 was a lot like yours. They diagnosed her with colic and that was that. She had undiagnosed reflux issues and would have difficulty with consistent bowel movements, would scream in pain, etc. Our pedi told us to give her 1oz of camomile tea per day and it really helped! It calmed her stomach and her, and cut down on the gas. Once she could sit up around 6 months, the crying stopped and the problem went away. Also, turns out she had a milk protein allergy, which we found out later, but cleared up at 13 months. Good luck!

My suggestion for the short term (till doc's figure out the real issue) is to try The Windi - there were times it was the only way my LO could relieve her gas and go poo. It's not medicine which is nice. My LO would scream and be so uncomfortable if she couldn't get her poop out so I used The Windi for a few weeks and it was magical. She doesn't need it anymore as she has learned how to release her gas/poo now. Just a suggestion as something you could try! Praying you and LO find relief soon!!!
  • Thank you to everyone who replied! I really appreciate it more than you know ☺
  • @KYmama9286 when they did the test for acid reflux they had her drink a bottle of just barium. And her growth has been good. She didn't have any 3 month check up but I take her for her 4 month check up this week so I'm anxious to see her weight and height.
  • My daughter only poops every 5 days. It panicked me to start with but now it is just routine and I know not to leave the house on day 5 (she FILLS her diaper and then some).
She has had some GI issues as well. She has out grown most of them but is still very pukey. Have you tried probiotic drops? I started my daughter on them a couple weeks ago and I have noticed a great change. She pukes less and seems more content.
  • @tpete12 no I haven't tried probiotic drops. She isnt ever pukey but wonder if that would help with her gi issues. I will have to try it. Thank you!
  • My cousin was a horribly fussy baby. He could only drink goats milk based formula or something weird. it took them a long time to figure out. My aunt avoided any onions, cabbage, dairy, garlic, chocolate, caffeine... You name it. Once the doctors figured it out things got much easier.

A friend of mine solved a similar problem by dropping oranges and acidic fruits/veggies.

    Have faith, be strong!

My guy isn't fussy most days. He is breast fed and poos every three days. His tummy gets all messed up before his dump too. That part seems regular to me.
