Dr. Sears Alternative Vaccination Schedule

edited January 2016 in November 2015 Moms
As many of our LO's reach that 2 month vaccination time  - are any of you choosing to do the Dr. Sears Alternative Vaccination Schedule? Have you in the past with your LO? I'm just curious to hear the experience of those who have gone this route.

Re: Dr. Sears Alternative Vaccination Schedule

  • I am doing something kind of like that. The doctor would have gladly given my son 5-6 shots on his two month check up. I just think that's too much at one time. We did two shots and one oral vaccine (rotavirus). We go back next week (3 months) for more and then more at the four months. I just think they give too much at a time to these tiny babies so I'm trying to space his out about more. A friend of mine's daughter got 5 in a day a few weeks ago and had a seizure that night. I know it's rare but still. With getting the three at his two month he was knocked out that afternoon. I can't imagine if we had went with the 5-6 that day.

  • Here on PEI in Canada they only get 2 shots and an oral at 2 months, then some more at 4 months so there really isn't a need to space them out, not that I would anyway.
  • We are doing the Dr. Sears extended schedule. Our pedi was great about it. When we said we only wanted tdap and rotavirus, she knew immediately it was Dr. Sears. She said if it seems like she is doing ok with the vaccines then at done point if we are comfortable, then we can continue on with the cdc schedule. She'll be going to a home daycare where she'll be the only child there some days so we figured we didn't need to inundate her little system with so many vaccines at once.
  • I know insurances are different, so technically LO only had two shots (and the oral) but the shots and oral covered 6 vaccines total. The baby in the room next to us literally had 5 needles and the oral.

So is the vaccination alternative schedule about spacing out the actual shots or the amount of vaccinations at one time? I'm so confused! (And just curious)

It's spacing out the amount of vaccines at one time. It may not space out the number of needles though. You can request some be individual and not combine with others.
  • This is going to sound crazy but i actually follow more of a scandinavian schedule. The norwegian exchange student i had as a kid actually went on to be a doctor and just had a baby of her own so i talk to her a lot about medical stuff when it comes to babies and their schedule seems more spread out and less intense for babies, but still covers all core vaccines. I know thats a little bit out there but im comfortable with it.
  • How does that work with insurance though? If you normally go in at 2 months and at 4 months, etc, would the insurance generally cover adding in the extra appointments to get the other shots? Because then you would have to go every month right?
  • At our two month appointment, she got the oral serum and three shots, but some shots contained more than one vaccine (Diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis are all in the DTaP, for example). We are doing all recommended vaccines at the recommended intervals.

Our insurance covers vaccines so each time we go it is covered. I made sure to ask how it would be billed to insurance. It shouldn't be a problem, but double check with your pedi and insurance. When we go for the next set of shots, we won't see the pedi, a nurse will administer them.
  • We are following the standard schedule, though my son won't be getting his 2 month shots until a couple days before he hits 3 months, due to scheduling issues. He's at home with me all the time so it's not a huge issue, but I hate that it's so long until he gets them. I couldn't spread them out personally, just because I worry about all the parents these days that aren't vaccinating their kids and I want mine protected ASAP, but I can also see the appeal of not doing a ton of them at once.
  • We are doing the traditional schedule also. I will be flying internationally with Z in March, May and July. I want him to be better protected because of all the traveling we'll be doing with him so young still.

  • I'm giving them on the recommended schedule. In fact LO got them all at 6 weeks because that's the soonest the CDC allows. I want him protected from disease as soon as possible and the CDC schedule recommends them at the time they are safest and most effective.
  • We're following the CDC schedule, I want LO protected as much as possible! We're flying to California a week after her 2 month visit and I want to make sure she has what vaccinations she can get before we get on a plane.
  • I'm interested in hearing from those who have done the alternative schedule. Not those who are doing the regular schedule since I'm already familiar with that
  • I followed Dr. Sears schedule with my daughter, and we'll do the same with put son. Healthy as horses. Lol
  • We are doing the CDC schedule, the side effects of the shots (if your LO gets them) will happen whether you space out the shots or get them all at once is my belief so I'd rather deal with any uncomfortable symptoms right away and have my little girl protected as soon as possible. If she has a fever or fussiness or is tired I'd rather her symptoms not be spread out.

This is just my belief, no judgment to anyone who does things differently.
