NBR- dogs barking

Ok so it's kind of baby related because if it continues after baby is here, I might have two dogs with their barker ripped out. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get them to stop barking constantly? I know they think they are defending their territory but they don't stop when we tell them to. We've tried a clicker thing, that was a waste. My husband keeps saying a shock collar but I really don't want to use that...

    Citronella collar. It spray an unpleasant (to the dog) fragrance up at them when they bark. Over time you may even be able to switch out the citronella for water as a placebo.

    We got a bark collar. I have two huge German shepards that's are terrified of everything and anything, I found an "ultrasonic" bark collar while hanging out on Amazon one day and it was less than $5 so I figured it's worth a try! I've never found anything else that worked so well!! It sends off a high pitched signal when they bark! My big guy was the most affected by it!!

    We use a spray bottle with water. Cheap 99 little travel size bottles, we keep several around the house. One of my dogs will stop at the sight of it. The other still needs a quick squirt as a reminder.

    One of mine is on anxiety medication because of his barking (amongst other behaviors). I tried just about everything for his anxiety and barking. This was a last resort.

    I have a German Shepherd, the only thing that worked was a bark collar. It gives a warning beep before it shocks and then shocks at the lowest setting if he does it again and the intensity rises from there. It took about two hours for him to figure out what was going on and now he knows that when that red collar goes on, it's time to be quiet. He doesn't even attempt to bark when it goes on and he actually likes it when we put it on him at night, (which is when he tends to bark) he walks right up and sits and lets me put it on him and then goes on to his bed and goes right to sleep. Got it at Petsmart, definitely the best 50 dollars I've spent there. My DH was a bit apprehensive about getting a bark collar for him too, but after seeing how well it worked, he recommends it to everyone.

    We used to use the citronella spray collar but now we use the shock collar. Our barking dog has definitely woken up our kids over the years. My kids are light and terrible sleepers. And we have an 80 lb dog so his barking is really loud. We originally bought the collar because a neighbor threatened to call the police, but now that I have kids I am so glad we have it. There is absolutely nothing worse than having something wake up your kids.

    My sister has three dogs.. Two of which bark...at....everything..
    They hired a trainer a while back and he still goes to their house and checks up on then from time to time..
    His suggestion to barking?

    Get a empty can ( green beans , corn , tomatoes etc) and cut the lid so you can put it back on- fill it with 20 pennies and duct tape it back together..
    When the dog barks shake the can
    It makes a noise that startles them and stops their barking..
    It takes a few times but eventually it'll train the dog "oh, when I bark that noise scares me"
    My sisters dogs barking had dramatically decreased over the past few months.

    you can get shock collars with a vibration setting so it vibrates instead of actually shocking them

    Have you ever had your dogs trained?  Sometimes they're barking because of underlying issues (fear, aggression, etc) and training can help pinpoint that and stop the behavior.  Petco offers a pretty affordable 8 week class that my husband and I did with our dog.  Now's probably not the ideal time, but at some point in the future, it could help!  We really found the class to be worthwhile.

    This exactly. My parents have two little yappers and DD1 sleeps right through their barking. I'm so paranoid about noise but LOs really can sleep through a lot!

    I have a 120 lb American bulldog and an Old English Bulldog who have become very territorial(more so than before)since I've become pregnant. Now that my son is here the barking doesn't even faze him when he is sleeping! It's crazy to me but as long as he continues to sleep through it I'm fine I guess. And they are laying next to him 99% of the time when they bark and holy buckets is it loud!

    We have 2 dogs, one is a barker, and I've also thought about this. 2 of our neighbors have barkers and babies and both said babies sleep through it so I'm hoping my kid will, too. I like the citronella idea...our dog trainer said if we really want to train it out of our one dog it can take a long time, lots of treats, and the ability to catch them almost every time someone is approaching the house to encourage the behavior you want. I personally like feeling like my dog is protecting us so I won't train her not to bark unless necessary (baby won't sleep through it). But, remember, baby heard all your dogs' ruckus in womb so baby is probably used to it!

    I have a Great Dane, as you can imagine her bark is LOUD. We had private training classes & well she's just bull headed and not the brightest pup. She's old now, but we lived in an apt about 5 years ago and her barking was unacceptable there. I bought a cheapo shock/bark collar at Walmart. It beeped first then shocked. She wore it for just a few weeks & we've never had trouble with excessive barking since. My best friend does have small, insanely yappy Pomeranians and the barking didn't bother her son as an infant. Now that he's 2, their barking wakes him up during naptime which is a real pain.

    Seriously, get a shock collar or bark collar with different intensities. Try it on yourself (AFTER YOU GIVE BIRTH!!!) ours feels barely sharper than a nine volt battery and still works on our giant dogs. We only used it on shock a few times, then changed it to vibrate.

    If you aren't shocking the hell out of a tiny dog on the high setting, and you are using it to interrupt an unwanted behavior long enough to redirect them, and not using it as punishment, it isn't cruel.

    If anything, lowering their stress level (and yours) is beneficial for all.

    I was totally against them at first too, but they've been a life saver and honestly, you can get a super mild version then switch it to vibrate or beep only once your dog gets the idea. I think it mimics the tiny "bites" pack leaders, or dominant dogs, give others when they're acting unstable. Like a light tooth to the neck without pressure thing.

    Lurking from D15. My LO is 3 weeks old and my dog barks uncontrollably when the mail comes every single day. He sleeps right through it. I let my dog bark as normal while I was pregnant and I think that helped.
