which breast pump to get?

I could use some advice for those of you with experience.

My insurance will cover Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breastpump Starter Set or I can upgrade to Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breastpump Tote for $119, which would you recommend?

When I go back to work I will be working mostly from home but a few times a month I will work away from home (I'm a wedding photographer) - and will need to pump in different places (perhaps car or other unknown areas).  Does it matter? Thanks in advance!

Re: which breast pump to get?

  • I honestly don't know about those pumps personally. I do have a medela pump but I got it at Walmart for under $50. I really like it because you can plug it in or use batteries for on the go. That was a big help.

  • You don't need the bag and cooler for $120.. You can use your own large purse/diaper bag. I would ask them to make sure that the other one comes with a power source, though (a/c adapter or battery pack). If not, price those out to see how much extra it will cost you before deciding.

  • For that much money, I definitely wouldn't bother with upgrading to the tote. Good pump though!

  • I think the upgrade charge when I got my medela was only $50, so you could check with other DME suppliers to see if anyone has a better deal.

I actually resorted to craigslist, and ended up buying the exact medela PIS bag second hand for $10. (It was actually the entire pump that she was selling, but I removed hers and put my new one in.)
