Smooth moves - anyone have them?

I used to be so good at transferring my son from my arms to his crib without waking him up but lately I've been screwing it up and it's so frustrating! It's like Ive forgotten how to do it smoothly and he jarrs awake the second he touches the mattress. Not fun for mom or baby.

Any tips you mommas have for placing baby in the crib? A sneaky arm maneuver perhaps?

He's in a sleep sack now instead of a full swaddle so I think having his arms all loose is part of what is throwing off my game. Ugh :(

Re: Smooth moves - anyone have them?

  • I slide one hand under head and one under butt so I can easily lay LO down. I find that if I keep my hand across her chest / belly for 30 - 45 seconds the pressure soothes her from getting startled. Good luck!

  • Two things:
1- try a merlins Magic sleep suit, they are a good transition from the swaddle.
2- put him to bed drowsy but not asleep, give him something to look at in his crib so he's not just laying there. I have a cool turtle light that my son loves staring at until he falls asleep. And turn on some white noise!!
  • Two things that worked for us, since we're not at the drowsy but asleep stage yet (have tried it, don't feel like fighting it now that we're entering this leap):

First, we make an effort to rock him to sleep while holding him vertically against my chest. This means I can position my hands under his bum and behind his head, but it's just my hands, rather than my arms, that then need to be moved. It also simulates lying on his belly without the whole SIDS thing, so he goes into a deep sleep more easily.

Secondly, the biggest game changer for us was using a heating pad on a medium setting in his crib while we rock him to sleep. We take it out right before lying him down, and the warm mattress means he doesn't jolt when we put him down, since he was in my nice watm arms to fall asleep. It's been such a huge tool for us that we gave a heating pad to a friend at her baby shower last month.

    Hope something helps you!

  • When I place him down I leave my hand under his head for a few seconds until he closes his eyes again and it's helped us a lot

Vertical rocking! Genius!! I'm definitely trying that out tonight. I think it will solve my clumsy transfer problem.

Thanks ladies for all your suggestions :) very helpful.
  • Vertical works for us too.  I also leave my hand firmly on his tummy for about 30 seconds.
  • I keep my hand firmly on baby's chest and the other on the side of his body for a minute after laying him down so he thinks I'm still holding him, then I very slowly remove my hands. Also, white noise machine works wonders! (I have the Dohm one with the actual fan motor inside.)
  • Yes! Hand under head and butt. Gently jiggle the hand that's under the head. And you lower baby continue to jiggle as you softly tough the head to the mattress. Continue jiggling as you increase pressure by continuing to lower the head and then rest of the body. It works for me every single time and my daughter is a light sleeper! To remove your hands continue jiggling and slowly sliding your hands out. From the head first and place that on the belly, then slide out the butt hand. Lol.
