Can pregnancy change your breast milk?

I am weaning but still breastfeeding my 1 year old I was down to feeding in the morning, evening and at night if needed.

He suddenly stopped wanting to nurse and just started biting and then I discovered I was pregnant.

So my question to any other breastfeeding mamas out there is, do they know if your breast milk changes taste/consistency when you get pregnant?

I haven't been to the dr yet so haven't been able to ask her and I am mainly just curious about other people's experiences!

Thanks!!

Re: Can pregnancy change your breast milk?

  • There's some research that says that the taste and quantity of your milk can (not will, but can) change when you're pregnant. I'm not in a position right now to find it (mobile, and Bumping while I bathe).

I would expect a decrease in your supply. Like you said, though, talk to your doctor.

  • I have no first hand experience, but I've read that it can change the taste of your milk, or that some kids will start rejecting it when the mom gets pregnant.

  • Yes it can change flavors and quantity. Every woman's body responds different to nursing while pregnant, and each pregnancy can actually be different too. DD didn't mind, and she nursed my whole pregnancy and beyond. DS1 abruptly weaned (no warning/overnight) three months into DS2's pregnancy, so I'm guessing he minded the changes more because he was older and less of a needy nurser. So far DS2 seems fine, but he is nursing a lot more frequently again.

If you have more questions, the best guide for nursing while pregnant (and nursing non-twin siblings at the same time) is Adventures in Tandem Nursing.

  • Yes, the hormones can cause the taste of your breastmilk to change. I know a couple of moms whose babes self weaned after they became pregnant again. One was only 9 months :(
  • Supply can sometimes dwindle in early pregnancy (this is true for both my previous pregnancy and now this one.). We still continue to nurse with no weaning in sight but sure, new hormones, baby, taste and supply will vary ;)
  • We just found out preggo with number 2 an currently still nursing my 7 month old son. Doing research ourselves amd found taste and supply can change. Really hoping my son doesnt self wean cause not ready to be done.

@Jennmiller1I had taught my little boy the baby sign language for milk and he has completely stopped asking for it and when I offer it to him he just bites me, I had no idea that they can self wean when you get pregnant again, as I know plenty of people who have nursed through pregnancy. I hope that your little guy gets through it and you can continue to nurse. I think we are just going to wean as he has just turned a year and that was my goal, but it still makes me a little sad :(
