Drying up?

So I'm not really sure if I'm drying up or my supply is dropping or what is going on. Lp was sick last week and not eating super great but has plenty of wet and dirty diapers so I wasn't overly concerned. She primarily nurses unless I'm at work. Anyways. Monday she turned 4 months and I pumped way less then normal while I was at work and even when u woke up in the morning everyday this week I didn't feel 'full'. Lo still wakes up at night with an occasional sleep through the night. But that's pretty rare. Anyways.... I've always felt pretty full in the mornings, almost engorged. Feed her on one side and pump the other for the freezer. But this past week it's like there's not enough. We went to the pediatrician yesterday and she checked out fine even though she's had her cold for over a week. All day today it seems like she can't get enough... Not sure if I'm just drying up or what is going on. Lo definitely prefers breast over bottle. She can just have taken a bottle but the moment I get home she wants to nurse. But if my supply has decreased that much thinking about just being done?... I'v made it 4 months and have 9 gallon baggies full of pumped milk in the freezer. Any advice???

Re: Drying up?

  • Oatmeal and Gatorade ... whenever my supply starts to drop for whatever reason I drink a bottle of Gatorade and have a bowl of oatmeal. Works every time! In fact, I drink a bottle of Gatorade at lunchtime every day now since my supply goes down as the day goes on and it helps! That and drink tons of water :)

  • I don't think your supply is really dropping if her output is normal. If she's feeding more, it could be her growth spurt (16w is a common one, but it can hit late). I find I always feel empty during a spurt, but then engorged for a couple days afterwards, then return to normal. Anytime you are engorged, your body is told to stop producing milk-so baby keeps you empty to trigger an increase, and any time she STTN, it'll trigger a decrease.

If your pumping volumes are decreasing, try to boost your nutrition/hydration and maybe check the pump? Membranes need replacing occasionally.

  • It could also just be your body regulating to demand based production instead of hormonal. Over the last month I've noticed that I never feel full anymore and have to pump a little longer than before to get the same amount, and had to add an extra pumping session back in to my schedule (I EP). As long as babe is happy and has good output, I wouldn't worry. If she's nursing more then your body will make more.
