Babies: 3 - 6 Months

If you used Dr Brown preemie nipples...

How long did you use them for? When we first started the flow was too fast for our LO (who was not a preemie) so several people recommended the preemie nipple which seemed to be a lot better. Just curious how you know when to move up. Thanks!

Re: If you used Dr Brown preemie nipples...

  • We used them for almost 4 months. My son wasn't a premmie either. But it is what the hospital sent home, an We kept using them for so long for a few reasons. One, I was still nursing (which was challenging since day one) and I didn't want to make the bottle too easy... Two, he wasn't getting frustrated with the slow flow. We switched to stage one when he started drinking more at a time (premmie took forever to take down 6 oz) and he was starting to get frustrated.

  • My lo is 4 months (also not a preemie) but still on the preemie nipple. He's always had a strong suck, so it works well for us. He doesn't seem to be frustrated with the slow flow, and can still finish a bottle pretty quickly.

We tried a level 1 about 2 weeks ago, and he really wanted nothing to do with it. I'm just planning on offering the level 1 every so often, or when lo starts showing signs of frustration with the preemie. There really is no concern with keeping them at a preemie, it's really just about finding the right level for your baby.
  • If baby has burping/stomach trouble preemie nip can cause more air intake which is bad.
