Philly Moms Meetup

Posting here since the Philadelphia-area board is basically dead... I know there are a few Philadelphia/South NJ moms on our BMB and wanted to see if anyone was up for a meetup, a prenantal yoga class, etc. I'm newish to Philadelphia and would love to meet other moms-to-be :)

Re: Philly Moms Meetup

  • Put me down as tentatively interested. This spring is really busy for me (trying to get a lot of work done before checking out for maternity leave, also have a book deadline in March), but I'd love to meet some fellow posters if I can swing it. :)
  • Loading the player...
  • I can be swayed if we're talking food at El Vez ;)
  • Hi! I've been lurking for a while (due 5/31, not finding out sex, have 3 boys, work in non-profit, went to Penn state, going to grad school at Drexel, love food, etc). But I decided to FINALLY jump in for philly (the true love of my life haha) I live in south philly( we have way better Mexican than el vez ;) ) & work by Love Park.
I'm not sure where you are in the city, but there are lots of VERY active list servs for families. I could connect you to them? I'm also happy to do something- I'm pretty young, so I have few mom friends.
  • Going to El Vez when I can't have frozen margaritas would just break my heart. But I suppose I could be persuaded. ;)

South Philly and Love Park are both pretty easy for me to get to as well (although I guess that might depend on how deep into "South Philly" we're talking -- anything farther than East Passyunk might be a stretch).
  • OMG el vez... I know, I've been a couple of times in the past few months and just look longingly at the margarita list...

@epc5027 I'd love to be connected to other Philly moms/families. It's something I've been looking for but haven't yet found on other social media.
  • Depending on how big of a group we end up with, I'll throw out Capogiro and Gran Caffe as potential options too. We can't really get together for introductory drinks, but gelato might fit the bill.

**Lurking. I know Philly well although I don't live there. I would totally go to El Vez with you all if I could!
    Me: 38; DH: 41
    DS: Born 5-17-16

  • We're in East Passyunk & just bought a house in Newbold, but I'll go anywhere, it doesn't have to be South Philly. Capogiro is always good! Oh god or shake shack. Cantina on passyunk is great.
@babyfmama Ok great! I'm part of a few Google list serves, none are like on Facebook to my knowledge. The one is for south philly parents (kids south of Washington), but I see other people on it too. I don't think it matters too much. And they're always asking if there are groups for Fishtown families, West Philly families, etc. I'll ask & then let you know!
  • Oh god, I love the Cantina!! All of the Mexican food is horrible for my heartburn, but I'd be game for any type of food, or dessert or both.
  • I'm in queen village/Bella vista area!
  • Ahaa my sister used to work at the Cantina (and the Khyber). She's been in California for a few years now though, so unless you've been going there a while, it's unlikely anyone's crossed paths with her. Small world, though. And although it's been a while since I stopped by, I remember their brunch being pretty good.
  • Ugh khyber brunch is everything! Cantina brunch I like... I just like anywhere I can sit outside & drink margaritas! And I had friends who worked there too- such a small world!
And hey! My brother in law is in queen village! Have you been to the new kanella location?
  • Aw so glad there are a bunch of Philly mamas on here! Should we try to organize a brunch for an upcoming weekend? I'm in Center City near Washington Square but any of the places we're throwing out there work for me.
  • Sure, what dates/times work for everyone?

I'm busy this weekend but free next weekend (16/17th) and the one after (23/24th). Would love to meet up for brunch!
  • Both of the next two weekends work for me, too. How about you @epc5027 @rufflifephilly @Jenly117 ?
  • I can do the 23/4th. I'm booked for next weekend.
  • January is crazy for me. I can meet sometime in Feb. If January works best for you gals though, I'll come to the next brunch!
  • I'm happy to do a February weekend if that works better. So far, I'm only unavailable President's weekend because we're moving and I cannot wait! Either/or a though, I'm flexible!
  • We can always do both, too. No need to pick just one. :)

I figure we've only got a few more months before we're all due (scary!!) so probably better to get to know each other as best we can in whatever time we've got left before newborns make it harder to do social things!
  • I'm right in south jersey, but would love to meet with you ladies!
  • @Merciel totally agree! Let's all plan on the weekend of 1/23-24 and then doing it again in February. Where/when should we meet? Should we do El Vez?
  • Sure, I'm up for El Vez that weekend. Just give me a date and time and tell me who to ask the host/ess for, and I'm in. :)
  • That all works for me!
  • How about 1/24 at 11am at El Vez? I can make a reservation (under Amanda, as fun as it would be to have it under baby mama bahaha).
  • Sounds good to me. :)
  • I'm also a new to Philly mama-to-be.  I live in Northern Liberties and would love to meet all of you!
  • I have lived in Philly for two years, I am in northern liberties and would love to meet.
  • Great that there are so many Philly moms interested in getting together! I made a reservation at El Vez on 1/24 at 11:00 so please PM me if you plan to attend. If you can't make it that day we will do it again in Feb.

I can't send a pm because I'm mobile only, but I am planning to attend!
  • I am planning to attend.
  • Hi ladies! Since we are on blizzard watch I'm wondering whether we want to reschedule the 11:00 brunch at El Vez or make a decision on Sunday? I've have RSVPs from:
    @Epc5027 @Merciel
    @yineth1979
Anyone else planning on joining us?
  • I'm fine either way. El Vez is within walking distance for me, so weather is not an issue: I have warm boots and infinite stubbornness. However, if people for whom travel is less convenient would like to reschedule, I'm totally happy to do that too.
  • It's walkable for me too and I'm looking forward to brunch so let's plan on keeping our reservation. Everyone else, please let me know if you still plan to attend :)

I haven't posted in HDBD recently (every time I remember to take a picture, it's Friday) but I'll be the waddly pregnant lady with dark hair, gray Uggs, and a black (fake) foxfur scarf.

I was coming here to check on this! So, I *can* walk there, but I'll likely take a cab or the bus formally known as the 23. I'm not far really. My ability to make it isn't so much the question as how lazy I'll be to actually get there in the snow. Can I be a tentative yes right now? My heart is in it... But I'm not sure if I'll be in the mood to lay around & watch snow or go out in that incredibly peaceful wonderland that philly becomes after a good storm.
I'm a short redhead, I'm obviously pregnant, but I'll be honest, I'm chubby too these days  Oh! And I'm often wearing black!
  • This was fun! I had a really good time and would like to thank @babyfmama for setting it up.

Hope we can do it again sometime and that anybody who wanted to come but wasn't able to make it this time can make it out the next time around. :)
  • It was fun!! Thanks for trekking out in the snow @merciel and hopefully we can get an even larger group together next time.

FYI Philly moms, we had some hibiscus margarita mocktails at El Vez and it was *almost* as good as the real thing ;)
  • I hope this isn't too off-topic for this thread, but I'm wondering who you guys see & if you're pleased. I'm with Jefferson & was for my last pregnancy as well. I'm high risk, so I see mfms. They're... Ok. But it's so difficult to get in touch with them when necessary, I see residents who are sometimes rude or just incompetent, their wait times can be just so long. They screwed up my fmla paperwork five times before finally getting it right (and because I had to really push for it to be done correctly!). I thought about switching to Penn many times & many, many women I know have used them, but I know they're not perfect either & they have their list of frequent complaints. So, I thought I'd see if you guys liked anyone or had good experiences with a different practice... Or maybe you've had good experiences with Jefferson & have some tricks for dealing with them?

Also- I'm sorry I missed the last brunch, I just didn't want to go out in the aftermath of the blizzard! But if there's another, I'm on board!
  • I'm at Jefferson and have been really happy, but I'm also low risk (all my appointments have been of the super routine in-and-out in 5 minutes variety) and not using FMLA, so my experience has been different in part, I'm sure, because I just slide through the standard procedures and big institutions are typically really good about patients who just fit neatly in the boxes.

But so far everyone I've seen has been excellent (and actually inspiring -- the doctor at my last appointment was telling me about how she worked up until 5 pm on her due date, went home, and delivered the next morning before coming back to work a month later! Seeing that made me really go "wow" and feel better about the possibility of working so late) and I haven't had any residents and no complaints at all, really.

As far as setting up another brunch, I had a good time at the last one and would like to do it again, if we can figure out another time and place that works for everyone. I'm busy the weekend of Feb. 20th (doing a hippie childbirth class, wooo) but otherwise available this month.
