water break?

Hi folks - I'm 35 weeks and 3 days. This morning I got up to pee at 6AM and when I got up to go to work at 6:50 I noticed that my thick sweat pants and underwear were soaked through and there was a definite odor unrelated to urine. I called the labor line and they told me to put a pad in to see if I still was leaking. It's been a couple hours and so far, no more leaking. The doctor doesn't think I need to come in unless contractions start or I have more fluid. I really think they think that I peed myself, but I'm 100% that it was not urine. I called in sick for work because I think I would be too distracted and at this point I feel like anything could happen. Baby seems to be OK and is moving around as usual. Anyone ever experience this? What else could that have been? It was probably about 3 cups of water.

Re: water break?

  • I had this happen to me last time and it was seriously that I peed myself. I was at work and never had an urge to go to the bathroom,. I was just soaked instantly. You can go in and they do a test and be able to tell you whether or not it was really your water breaking. Good Luck. I would go in to make sure.

  • When my water broke it was a continuous flow, it didn't stop, and I soaked through multiple pads. Contractions also started shortly after. If you do have more fluid you can go in and have it checked to see if it is amniotic or not.
  • I had this happen with my first child. I was pretty positive I had woke up to my water having broke so I called L&D and they were so sure it absolutely had not broke as I wasn't having contractions so told me not to come in. It was never a continuous flow. So I went to work trusting them only to have to schedule an appt with my midwife later that morning for her to tell me my water had definitely broke and I was in labor.
I would get checked just to ease your mind and know for sure.

  • I feel so frustrated! They literally told me not to come in unless the leaking continued or contractions started. I just don't know what else it would have been.
  • I suggest you get checked. Especially since you feel you and know its not urine.

When my water broke with my son it started out a small amount and I wasn't sure. I called my doctor and they said to cough, and if the cough made more come out to go to the hospital. They checked to see if it was actually that my water broke, and it was. I didn't have the full on gushing until I got up into my L&D room and I went to pee, stood up and it poured out basically. I never had contractions either. I had to be put on pitocin, the highest they could go. When they turned the pitocin off to see if contractions would stay, they stopped.
  • Can you call and talk to your dr and/or nurse and ask to be seen?
My midwife told me if I ever have a situation like I did before, not to even bother calling L&D and to just call her first.

  • They can't turn you away if you go to be checked so if you're worried just go anyway. The worst that can happen is they test the fluid and they turn out right. That's much better than putting baby at risk of infection if your water did break and you don't get him/her delivered in time.

  • When my water broke it wasn't a continuous flow. It was a big gush and then my daughter's head blocked the rest. Once she moved, I was already admitted because I was having contractions, the rest came out. It was weird but I knew I hadn't peed myself
  • Go see your OB/MW to get checked out if you don't want to go to L&D.
  • When you're worried call your doctor
  • I peed my pants a few weeks ago, no urge to urinate or anything, just had urine running down my leg. It wasn't near as much fluid as you are describing though.
  • They could be right, you could be right. Like others have said, call your clinic (not the hospital), tell them you're concerned your water broke and you'd like to come in to get it checked. I highly doubt your doctor's office would tell you no.

  • I would go. Honestly it will be less stressful for you and baby knowing that you have the peace of mind.
  • They work for you, if you're concerned go in.

UPDATE! OK So at about noon I was sick of worrying and nicely demanded to get checked out. They did a pelvic exam and tested for traces of amniotic fluid. They also lifted the babies head to see if more water would rush out! That was weird. It was the most painful exam of my life because they could not use any lube as that would have skewed the results. SO, it was NOT amniotic fluid and I was sent home. I asked my sister if she had ever had anything like that happen and it turns out she also went to the hospital with her first because her discharge was so watery and plentiful. So there you have it. I can produce cups of watery discharge.
