Baby Tylenol for teething? How often? How much is too much?

My baby is 16 weeks and just started to really jam his hand in his mouth he doesn't seem like he is in too much pain. And lately 1 degree below a fever but this morning he was done his bottle and was putting is hands in his mouth and crying so sometimes he does that if he wants more milk so I put my finger in the receiving blanket and in his mouth and then he screamed... And he never screams put back in crib and cried a bit so I gave Tylenol. How often is everyone giving it while teething? Everyday? Twice a day? More? And for how long a week of two... Can you over due it. If this will help him I want to keep giving the Tylenol.

  • We thought our LO was possibly teething with the same symptoms. Constant drooling, fist in mouth, chewing on absolutely everything he could... But the doctor said he's not at his appt Monday. So I would a) ask your doctor for recommended dosage (2.5 mls every 4 hours, no more than 5 times in 24 hours), and b) make sure he's actually teething. Lots of teething symptoms are the same as normal development and growth symptoms and it's easy to confuse the two according to my doctor.

  • When my little guy gets super fussy and acts like he's in pain from teething, I give him a cold damp washcloth to chew on and it seems to help! I just wet a few baby washcloths, squeeze out the water, then put them in the fridge. Then I give him them to bite on, usually putting my finger in the washcloth, then in his mouth to chomp on.

I thought for sure my guy had teeth coming in too but the pedi said she didn't see any yet at our 4-month appointment. They can have teething symptoms up to a few months before a tooth emerges though.

I would use infant Tylenol sparingly and try other things first. If he has a fever that keeps creeping up, it's ok to use ... my 17 lb 10 oz took 2.5 mL after his shots when he got a fever, but I only gave him one dose and the fever went away. The nurse said I could give it to him every 4 hours until his fever was gone, but one dose did the trick. The amount you give is based on baby's weight, so I would check with a doctor or nurse.

Teething can last a long time and happens a lot over the next few years, so it's probably best not to go overboard on medicating :)
  • We are 15 weeks here and he has been teething since about the 3-month mark. You can see the teeth under the gums but nothing cutting through yet. I even brought him to his pedi and she confirmed he's teething. I find that Tylenol doesn't work so I use Motrin. I keep it for a last resort, I try his teething toys or let him gnaw on my finger first. But sometimes he just has his fists in his mouth screaming bloody murder-- that's when the Motrin comes out.
  • I thought my 17 week old baby was too young to be teething, but was showing all the classic signs that he was. His pediatrician confirmed it at his 4 month appointment and I was shocked! Since then he has had some crying spells, but it's so hard to know if it's from teething, shots, or the 4th leap! I only give him Tylenol when he's inconsolable and screaming in pain. So far this has happened once. I agree with pp and would talk to the pediatrician.
  • I was told no Motrin til DS is at least 6 mos old, so if check on that too, just in case.
