Cervical exam, dinosaur doctor with claws for fingers, and bloody show?

I went to L&D last night around 2 am. LO hasn't moved for awhile and I have been cramping for days. they had to cancel my weekly appt with the OB so I guess I was just nervous and needed to hear that little heartbeat as well.
Anyway I am currently 39 weeks and after they hooked me up and make sure everything was okay, the house doctor AKA as an ancient old lady whos fingers felt like edward scissorhands, checked my cervix to see if I was dialating more. I was at 2cm, 80% effaced and -2 station. But this check compared to my last ones was a little more painful and she "hung out a little more inside" I personally think she swept my membranes because I felt a circling motion inside and she came out with a bloody glove.

So my first question Is that was a sweep feels like? I have never had one to compare

Second, I was spotting(which I was told is normal ) plus around 2:30 today I believe I had my bloody show. Sorry about TMI but I was clotty before and a little more red blood, then the second time it was quite a bit of mucus and darker, old blood. Was it my bloody show or just spotting from exam?

  • I can't imagine she would have swept you without your consent...it sounds like she just is just a rough old lady and you're spotting from the exam.

  • My second cervical exam was way more painful than my first (same doctor though). She was in there a lot longer but did not do a sweep. A couple hours after I had a lot of mucus like substance tinged with bright red blood. I don't think it was my bloody show though. This all happened last week at 39+0.
  • I thought that at first too, until I got ahold of Google and there were SOO many stories of drs just doing it during the exam.
  • What your describing as "bloody show" sounds like exactly what my mucus plug has looked like for both DD1 and this pregnancy. I lost it in pieces a bit earlier this time around but it wasn't until about 39 weeks for my first pregnancy that I lost it. I panicked and called my nurse mom at work (poor grandma, thought for sure I was going into labor!) and she assured me it was mucus plug (as did my ob at my next visit). So it could be that, and then definitely nothing to worry about.
  • I had a cervical exam at 32 weeks that caused a lot of spotting. Stupid doctor whacked my cervix with the speculum! In the late stage of pregnancy it can be hard to distinguish the show from post-exam bleeding so if I were you I'd try and ignore it until you get early contractions. Either way sounds like baby soon! :D
  • I went into L+D about a week ago being paranoid and they did a cervical check. Bleeding is common after, but my nurse told me that anything more than spotting to come back in. Definitely uncomfortable and painful (my cervix was still very high at that point), but the initial OMG LOOK AT THE BLOOD was only the first 30 mins then it just spotted for the rest of the day. DEFINITELY glad it's not common practice with my OB until I get close to or go over my due date

  • I had my membranes swept with my first without being told (39+4). Went into labor 2 hrs later.

  • You would definitely know of they swept your membranes. .. I had mine done with my second baby like 3 times. First two were uncomfortable and the 3rd time he did it is almost started crying it hurt so bad.
  • I can't imagine she would have swept you without your consent...it sounds like she just is just a rough old lady and you're spotting from the exam.

Lurker here but mine were swept without my knowledge or consent. I sat up and blood pooled beneath me so I sent DH running to see what was wrong and was told it was normal after a membrane sweep. Needless to say I had a new OB for my next one.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I had to have two new midwives because mine was out of town. She literally stuck her finger through my cervix far up there. Well at least it felt like that. The others did NOT do it as tough as this midwife. So I wondered if she swept my membranes and I was bleeding after as well but she did tell me it was normal.

I actually expressed my fears of something like that happening and she, OB, made notes in the record to pretty much leave me along
