August 2016 Moms

High anxiety (a vent)

I have had spotting this entire pregnancy. It seems to have slowed down over the past two days.  I was seen in the ED (while on vacation) a week ago this Sunday to rule out an ectopic pregnancy (was having lower right sided pain in addition to the spotting), and everything looked OK on ultrasound.  They told me I was 5  wks + 2 days at that point, so there really wasn't much to see - just a gestational sac and yolk sac in the right location. I guess this makes me 6 wks + 4 says today.

Anyway, I continued to spot after my visit.  I also got norovirus shortly after my ED trip (probably from travelmates who brought their vomiting toddler on vacation with us) and lost 8-9 lbs over three days of illness and agressive vomiting. I now weigh about 104 lbs at 5'4" (not good). Needless to say, I'm not feeling really great about the health of this pregnancy.  I have my ED follow-up appointment today with my OB provider at home.  I really have a sinking feeling that they're going to tell me the pregnancy is non-viable.

I'm trying to be hopeful, but I just have a forboding feeling about this visit. I am at home today and my daughter is at daycare. I would normally spend this day being super productive, but all I've been able to do is watch the clock, counting down the minutes until my appt.  I leave for the appt in 1.5 hours.  Just 90 more minutes to go...

  • Breathe. Your weight loss shouldn't be an issue. Lots of women have severe pregnancy sickness and loose much more weight. I had spotting in 2/3 pregnancies and of those 2 one was perfect, the other was not. If your hormone levels were good though just try to relax before your appt. good luck!

  • I bled heavily when I was pregnant with my son. Before I knew that I was pregnant, I actually thought that I have having a period. It happened a couple more times after that.

My son is now just over 2.

Agreed with PP - many women experience very severe morning sickness and lose much more weight with no I'll affects to the baby.

Keep us updated about your appointment. Good luck!

  • @jmknox -- well, actually it wasn't *quite* planned this way. I quit my job because I graduated with my MS Nursing degree last month and wanted to concentrate on passing my nurse practitioner boards and then get a nurse practitioner job.  So I set up my last day, had someone hired to replace me, etc. before I knew I was pregnant (this pregnancy was a little bit of a surprise because I was breastfeeding and hadn't had a period yet). Ideally, my husband and I had planned to start trying again once I passed my boards and had a job.  I'm still going to look for a job, but feel like I have to get one NOW and am actually looking at RN jobs again. I feel like no one is going to hire me if I'm starting to show.  They'll just say there was a more "qualified" candidate.
