Anyone using birth ball/exercise ball?

Any mamas using a birthing ball to exercise or help get your body and/or baby ready for labor? FTM & I'm 38+5 and not having any signs of labor just yet but I've got an exercise ball and wondered if anyone has used one? TIA!

Re: Anyone using birth ball/exercise ball?

  • I think it's helpful in labor, but doesn't make you go into labor or anything.

  • 37+3 and I am using one to try and get an oblique baby into position. I think it has benefits once you're in labor but won't help induce it.
  • I have had mine since about 34 weeks and found it really helps when I have a lot of pressure and back/hip pain. They say it does help to get the baby low and in position. I had an appt today and my baby is super low, not sure if it is directly due to the ball or not. Worth a try!
  • I used it sporadically all of my third trimester to encourage good positioning and now I use it daily for at least 30 minutes to relieve some back/hip pain and continue to positively position baby. I plan on using it during labor for comfort/dilation help.
  • Yes!! Same as pp I got mine at beginning of 3rd tri and it has been absolutely amazing. My baby has sat very low all along so it's been great relief for my hips and helps stretch them. I just straddle it as wide as I can get and roll all around. I have an easier time sleeping I do it right before bed. I def plan on using one at the hospital too if it works out.
  • I use mine whenever my back hurts and it works pretty well to ease the discomfort. I sometimes have a hard time standing afterwards because baby gets real low after using it.
  • My OB told me that it can help get the baby down into the pelvis and in the correct position for labor. She also said it helps to open up your pelvis to prepare you for labor. Plus I think it's super comfortable. I use it while watching tv.
  • I have enjoyed using one as well. My doctor commented that this baby is sooooo low... lower than he's seen in a while!
  • I'm really glad for my ball. I defiantly helps with positioning and get baby low so I can breathe better. And now at 40+3 it like the only comfortable way I can sit!
  • I love the ball. I try and use it for an hour a day bouncing and another 30 minutes rolling/rotating my hips. I just do it in the evenings while I am watching TV. It helps with my back and hip pain a bit but actually is pretty comfortable as well. And it makes me feel like I'm doing something productive, which is worth its weight in gold right now.
  • I just used mine tonight! I've been told it can help get baby in the correct position. I find it comforting too.
  • I used it during the induction to help with contractions! It helped until I got light headed (from an empty stomach) they made me lay down after that lol.
  • Me too like everyone else here I've been using mine for bouncing and hip rotation exercises to help baby get into a good position. As your hips are tipped slightly forwards on the ball rather than backwards in the sofa it helps ensure your baby is in the optimal birthing position (LOA) so the baby isn't back to back and that the baby starts to drop as the exercise opens the pelvis. I also leant over the ball when baby was breech earlier in pregnancy. I have moved from a breech baby in week 31 to baby being consistently in LOA since week 36 (currently 38+3). I also find it more comfortable than normal chairs as I have posterior pelvic pain. You can use for the birth and after the birth once you have the OK to exercise they are fantastic for core exercises as they test your balance. So a good purchase!
  • All your responses are so reassuring! I've been trying to use it for an hour every night to Bounce and stretch my hips. It feels pretty comfy for the hour I'm on it but any longer and it actually makes me sore! I know it's probably my muscles strengthening so I stick it out as long as I can. I Will def use during labor to help also!!
  • I had one, and I thought it was really fun and comfy and it definitely helped with my hip soreness. Then my husband discovered that it was really fun and comfy too and ended up popping it while we were hanging out with friends in our living room a couple weeks ago. One second he was bouncing a little and the next second there was a huge bang and it was like it had just disappeared and he was flat on the floor. So, sad that I lost my ball but glad it wasn't me who broke it and also it's been fun to tease him about it.
