6 1/2 month feeding

I'm sure this has been asked a million times. How much is your 6 1/2 month old eating? This is our schedule

8am 2oz of 1st stage fruit puree with 6oz of formula

12pm 2oz of 1st stage veggies puree with 6oz of formula

330-4pm 2oz of 1st stage veggie puree with 6oz of formula

7-8pm 4oz of 2nd stage dinner puree with 6oz. Of formula.

My question is... Is this too much? Especially for her last meal? She has been sleeping through the night since 4 months regardless of how her feeding has changed. My husband and I argue all the time about how much to feed her. He always wants to lower her formula intake which I tell him you shouldn't lower her milk because that's still the main source. He wants me to do 4oz of 2nd stage dinner puree and 4 oz of milk. He tries to keep all her feedings at 8oz including her puree and milk. What are your thoughts? What's your total ounce intake for your babies puree plus milk?

Re: 6 1/2 month feeding

  • You would probably do better to put this in one of our feeding threads. We have a bunch. There's one for December, January, one on finger foods, and another on making baby food. But to answer your question, my girl turned 6 months a week ago. She only gets about an ice cube worth of purée once a day. I was told to nurse her first because her main source should still be bm. Because of this, she can't fit more than an ice cubes worth in her belly. My pediatrician didn't even want us starting solids until 6 months.
  • I would just wonder if you want to get her used to such late dinners? Is that last meal necessary? What has your doctor recommended?
  • Agreed, it's been said a million times but food before 1 is just for fun. Milk or formula should not be lowered this early! Why does he feel it should be 8 oz?
  • Babies do not need more than 3 meals of solids a day.
This is what I try to do daily-
Lo wakes around 6am, nurse her, put her back in crib, wake her up at 7:30
Breakfast/purée around 8 (she usually eats the most now) I make oatmeal and give her fruit so maybe 2/3 oz total
    Nurse around 9
    Nap 9:30
Lunch (purée)/ nurse after nap around 11:30-12:00 (she doesn't eat much for lunch of the purée)
    Nap 1:30
    Nurse around 3:00
Dinner usually meat or veggie when we have dinner around 5:30 maybe 2oz
    Nurse at 6:30
    Bed at 6:45

I don't think your lo needs as much solids as she is getting. Like pp has said, breastmilk is the main source of food right now.

I'm a little concerned your husband seems a bit inflexible on this. But yes I agree with others this seems like a lot of solids. My husband wants to rush it too a bit... But at 7 months she still eats 30 ounces of formula and 6 ounces of purées a day, roughly.
  • Wow that's a lot of solids. Right now we are feeding 4 6oz bottles a day, and giving only 2.5 oz of purée midday, followed by a 5oz bottle. There has been some discussion about adding a second round of purée in the evening, but usually LO is too antsy / cranky for that.
I'm assuming you've discussed this with your pediatrician?

Welcome to the board. Feel free to join in on the other feeding threads and see how we are all managing this transition away from bottles (bm or formula)

  • I agree that food is for fun at this point. Men have some crazy thing with solids because they hear their grandma's talk about putting gravy in bottles and feeding them siolids and how fat they were. Well what grandmas (love em) forget is that we know more now. DH constantly brings up "back then" and "used to".

We do oatmeal and fruit at 8ish and 4oz of veggies at 5.
  • Lillian drinks 8 ozs every 2 hours .and eats Gerber graduate meals. She hates pureed stuff. She eats half the meal at a time. Today was spaghetti with meat pieces..She almost ate the whole spoon lol
  • I breastfeed 4 times a day and baby eats solids three times. at my last apt the ped said it should be at least two but try for three, sometimes our one solid feed is usually small. I will second the as long as they are growing do what works for you
